it looks to me it may have been dipped at some point, or maybe it's just the lighting..

The reason I don't think it is MS is the very slight wear on the leaves on the reverse. Very tough to tell unless you have it in hand. Solid AU.

Received it last night. Looks nice, may be an AU or better. The details of a leaf or two on the right might be a bit weak (seen under 10x when compared to some Vicky quarter blowup in Charlton), although I don't have a clue since this is my first quarter of this design. The obverse looks nicer (lots of details even on the hair/beard). Dipped? Again I don't have a clue, but may be. Here are some more pics:

Now I'm thinking only at best an au58.

Hopefully I'm wrong and you'll get my original maximum grade guess of ms62.

Much nicer in your pics than in the sellers.
Take it out of the 2x2 and crop the pics with the forum image optimizer, It may be a weakly struck MS beneath the plastics glare.

Thanks!

DBM: will do that sometime later if I haven't sent it in for grading. Are there any parts that you are particularly interested to see?

Did that, and it's definitely not MS ; or that's what I think. At least I know what to look for now . Here are some of the worst places w.r.t wear:

missing details on some of the leaves on the right

wear on the vertical beads (gems?) on the center of the crown leading towards the orb

UNC is definately an overgrade given the colour inconsistency that can be handling traces.
I am new to grading these coins. Can someone explain why it's AU 53 but not higher? Is it the wear?

I think so.

BTW, I found a really good LCS (and am really happy about this ); very friendly people; their grading is very strict and comparable, if not a bit harsher, than ICCS/CCCS, even on the raw coins they are selling . So I showed them my coin and they graded it EF-45 . I learned my lesson! I ain't EVER bidding high on an raw coin online, EVER .

Anyway, I bought a 1919 AU-50 quarter from them for $50, which I think is definitely a ICCS MS coin (I do have other ICCS MS quarters to compare). Anyone living in the Clarkson/Oakville area, the shop's info is as follows:

http://www.centurystamps.com/century/home

They don't have a huge collection, but their website does NOT reflect their inventory.
