Numismatic Rarity Or Fad?

Now please keep in mind that all of us should be looking through our change. You just never know what will pop up. Mules, varieties, errors all can spice up the life of a collector and add a couple of dollars to our pockets. Just don't be greedy with it. If you find one, offer it on ebay or some other venue without reserve and take whatever the market allows.

I live here in New Mexico , between the golden states for these quarters, up until a few days ago I would get any number of wisconsin quarters in my chage from different places, today ,and yesterday I have not received one wis. in my change,,, I wonder if they are being picked out at the bank,Checkers at super markets and convienence stores,, sales clerks at the local hardware ,, gas stations even wal mart did not produce any ?

I personally view all the modern coins as too much hype. All the current designed coins have mintages in the billions. For those dealers or sellers marketing them as ultra rare or condition rare are simply taking advantage of people who truely have no clue what rare is.
The low tier grading services survive on this and the proof is in the pudding. So many MS or PR 70 coins are popping up that the values cannot be held. Until all the dust is settled, there is just no accurate way to judge the rarity of coin. When looking at the older proven series, there are plenty of facts to go back and research.
We as a whole are in such a frenzy to make something out of nothing, that we grab at any dream that comes along. The newer coins, Lincolns, Jeffersons, Roosies, State Quarter all have unique collectors that are specializing in them hoping to make something out of nothing. In the early years, most of these coins were not struck particularly well, but no date in the series are truly hard to come by. (Errors excluded). So each group is trying to find something to bring the series to the front of the hobby. We have full steps, full torches, and a few others. In todays Mint, weak strikes are truely rare. Coins put into the Mint and Proof sets are remarkable for the most part.
There is nothing wrong with collecting these coins, but why pay premiums for coins that are in no way, shape or form rare.
For the past couple of weeks I have been receiving calls about this quarter. I have not, nor will not buy these things. In my opinion, they are not rare, nor worth the price.

If you want a set of the varieties, I'd wait for another couple of months. I firmly believe these prices will come down significantly. I would say that the people who running "sales" on these have figured out that the hype is what kept the prices so high and they see the writing on the wall.

Hi guys- on ebay completed auctions it seems as if there are less sales of the Wisc varieties and the prices continue to trend ever so slightly down. 3/16 completeds- lows went for right around $100 in uncirc, highs over a wider range-maybe centered around $150. None going for 200+ as last time I looked at completeds on 3/3 or so.

Gotta love some of the wierd variants folks are trying to peddle- Wisc "smoke", an extra hat line above John Muir on the CA 25c, "fat" leaf Wisc quarter, etc.
