If you like Starbucks or Applebee's you can get actual value for them in the form of a gift certificate at a coinstar machine at my local Wal-mart. Along with a few other terrible options to spend your money on.

If I have to pay for any purchase that is not a 5% cashback bonus category on the credit card I pay I pay with halves or dollar coins or $2 bills.

For now, the bank will take them. Spending $2 bils, Sacs, Susan Bs, etc at Wal*Mart can be a real pain. The checker has to call the manager to determine what that foreign stuff is worth.

I've been harassed about Susan B's before. The teller thought they were counterfeits. After calling the manager over for a look they still would not take them.

I had a bunch to trade in. I use them for all purchases under $10. Using them to purchase at coin shoes is good too.

Because I may search $20k-30k per year, I need to be able to unload say $1k at once.

My CU will take them, bag 'em up and send 'em out.
My other CU has a fast counter, ($500 in about 2 minutes).

COIN SHOES?
Didn't know anyone made those. Might be a good idea. Wonder what shoes would look like made of half dollars.

Not sure but I've heard rumors that places called banks take large quantiies of coins. I know BOA will take anything in coins but you need an account. They will take them regardless but there is fee if no account there.
I still say just spend them as if real money.

We all keep dump banks, that we use to discard the coins.
Usually I take mine to my local credit union, they even treat me special since they want the dimes that I bring back with the halves. You see banks have to purchase change and it costs over face value, this is why the credit union likes to see the coins come in. They don't have to buy as much. I dump $3000 a week to the dump bank $1K in havles $2K in dimes.

Halves are hard for banks to get rid of since they are not used in currency much.

Do you have a bank in your area with a coin count machine?
I hear these places take halves, of course you will want to have an account.

When you open a new account at a new bank ask if they have any problem with large returns of coins.

I took some of my halves to a different branch of Wells Fargo and added to my savings account. The rest I'm spending.

Closed my account at BOA, the snobs, lol - they kept messing up my orders, (I ordered maybe 3 or 4 times a year, how hard is it for them to get it right? Also, they wanted to hold my dump for counting, they'd deposit my $ later - forget it - I've gone with CU's that give me my cash immediately w/counting later.
As far as just spending halves, some places like gas stations wont take 'em (they don't always fit the till). Merchants do not have to accept larger amounts of coin for payment, so its up to their whim.

i dump a lot of halves at Walmart through their self checkout lanes.

WHAT!? Those liars told me the machine cannot take anything bigger than a quarter! Well I mostly dump nickels and dimes there, but still.

I mostly dump mine at grocery stores and gas stations.

I'm sure most post offices will recognize them, so spend them anywhere really. The recipient may want to give those coins to their children or nieces/nephews.

I tested trying to buy a taco at taco bell up here in canada with a silver large dollar and a susan, and the cashier refused after getting the manager! I ended up paying with my debit card. Lesson learned: Only dump halves/susans at the free coinstars at certain banks, or at the self serve checkouts. Beats waiting in line at the bank
