I've got at least one from every year they were minted, in EF or better, but I haven't got the varieties yet. I've got my hands full trying to keep up with the small cent varieties and errors.
I've just started buying some on ebay recently, I really like the look they have and also the fact that some of them are more than 100 years old.
I'll be looking to add to my collection a little at a time, hopefully I can find a place in Montreal (& surroundings) that could supply me with some of them at a decent price.
Yesterday, I sort of added 45 Vickies to my 3 large cents ... paid something like $5 per coin. I usually prefer quality over quantity, but since they were not too bad (VG+), and there are so many varieties, I thought it would be really fun to identify/grade/play with them before possibly reselling them .
I read about them and have some in my collection...really only in to them about 6 months and now nothing.....even back then no real MS ones,,,,,,Fine closer.....I like your coins there CAddict...I did think that 1900 and up more plentyful and cheaper than 1800's....1900 to 1920's would be an easier collection...
I started out collecting large cents - have a date set, and never really got into variations (just read about 1859's and you get the idea of how many there are). I like the detail and size of them, especially when there is some lustre left on them.
I'm slowly building a date/mm set from coins I pick up in random non-USA-coin auction and estate sales lots. These coppers are pretty common 'down here' but seldom are they high grade. Price is typically a dollar each or less. Have yet to find 1858. :( Photo shows the most recent group pick-up. Total I own now is probably somewhere around 100. Varieties? You mean to say there are varieties of these?
I have a bunch of them, but they just don't do much for me. I keep a couple in my main book just to show people, but the ones that are "worth" the most, are just black, dirty coins to me. I much prefer the early silver too.
@GaryN: maybe you should get a certified red higher-MS one; I have a 1913 CCCS MS-64 Red one and under the proper light, it looks stunning, even prettier than any of my gold pieces. Here is a clip that I shared earlier (although I'm trying to show off the potential problems with the coin in this clip):
