I'm still working on mine, I can now see a little bit of a figure on them. Boy was there a lot of scrap on them.
Wouldn't it be better to keep it in the same tread?

I started on one of mine. I was super excited and forgot to take before pictures. This one started with a black layer that was clear dirt over both sides. Most is gone now. My question is how can you tell what is patina (which you want to leave), and what is dirt that you want to remove. I have read that patina can be many colors, including red. Am I down to the patina or is this red layer more dirt, that was not exposed to air or something. Thanks for the help. I don't want to damage these, but if I do damage this one I think it is "okay" because no details are showing up. Still would be sad to damage it though. Side 1  Side 2  Also, sorry about the not so great pictures. I got lazy and took them as Jpeg instead of Raw so the white balance isn't the same in both of them, but I think they will do for the question at hand. |

same thread or different...it's up to you guys. you're down to the metal, what's left of any patina is the green stuff. there just isn't anything you can do with this one really. the good news is, you're can't really do much to hurt it. I can see the outline of the head and see some bumps where the legend is, but can read any. can you? the reverse...uh...who knows, fallen horseman?

I can not read any of the legend. The reverse two raised lines in the middle that kinda look like what would have been people. How can you distiguish patina from dirt?

good question, sometimes one mans dirt, is another mans patina. there green spots are what's left of you patina probably. now I'm thinking its two standard there in the middle, of soldier with standards fame.

This is April 1 2014   Put in a shot glass with Verdi-care, Apr. 2 cleaned, back in Apr. 4 cleaned, back in, acytone Apr. 5 cleaned, back in VC Apr. 6 cleaned, back in VC Apr. 13 cleaned back in olive oil Apr. 19 cleaned back in OL Apr. 24 cleaned back in OL May 3 cleaned back in VC this is what you see now   Forgot to turn the cent. I still don't know what I have , it will take a bit longer to get them to where I can see anything. Any help? |

i'd say 2, 4, and 11 o'clock may be identifiable...at least as type. I'm surprised how well 4 oclock is coming out..didn't thing you'd see anything there, now I can clearly see the standing figure (spes reipublice?)...i suspect there isn't going to be any more improvement on 12 and 8 oclock. after you next cleaning maybe post close up pics of each coin individually.

I tried a PM, but I'm a new member, so no such luck.
Do you have a baggie still by chance? I'd be interested in giving cleaning a shot. The idea of treasure hunting lots by cleaning sounds real fun. Oddly enough, I know my gf would be into it to. Her father would probably make it a full time job.

I still cannot tell for certian if the first I cleaned is a Valens or Valentinian I.. I'll try to post better pics. And as for the second I'm pretty sure (still, lol) that it's a Constantivs II ?if not possibly Constans, definitely a fallen horseman reverse but I'm not 100% as to which one, lol, I'm leaning towards ROM... Due to the thin neck of the lower figure and the position of the shield the soldiers standing on? But the spear and arm creating the "4" doesn't match that one perfectly... Mine makes more of a "4". Here's the best pic I can get for now... Again I'll try to get better pics of both so maybe you guys can positively identify them..   I've also cleaned the third off.... But it's pretty worn, I'm pretty sure it's also a fallen horseman but it's hard to be sure, again it's pretty worn. I don't know if I'll get that one any closer to identifying.. And I still have two soaking that I haven't touche yet... Waiting for a rainy day  thanks again! |

sorry lod, I'm out of coins now.  nathan, I'm pretty sure your first was valentinian. you're second coin..i don't know. is that an "S" at 1-2 o,clock there? has some decent details on the bust really, I din't think it would come out that good. can you make out any letters on the mint mark? |
