Looks like a AU-53 That "thing" is just a small rim hit with won't affect value or get this a details grade. You did well for $40.

No weak strikes from the mints will have effects on the bands. I see flow lines all over the obverse under the toning. How is the luster? You could very well have a mint state coin there IMO. There's not a lick of wear unless someone can specifically point it out to me and although darkly toned that should not put it in an AU range

Yes, doesn't seem to be any ware on this coin. But the bands seem a little flatten and there is a rim issue on the reverse at 5:00 just above the I in dime. Also the metal on the cheek lots odd. I'd say if this coins is ligit, an AU 53, I think it was in circulation just a short time. I've never seen a Merc dime with a worn die strike on the obverse and a good strike on the reverse but what do I know. I say ligit cause of the way the metal appears grainy on the cheek, nose and forehead. A little in the field in front of her head also. Sorry for rambling. :)

its not a fake coin nor is it a circulated coin and the reverse rim is a bit of Cud. I don't mean to be so firm IMO but again, from the education I have gotten over the course of time now, when you see flow lines as evident as you do on the obverse of this coin, you have a coin that at worst, is getting knocked into an AU grade due to the discoloration of the surface. Any flaws in the relief are not from circulation and had this coin been a clean blast white, those relief flaws would be the difference in grading it MS63 versus MS65 or 66.

Split Bands, but not quite FSB = 'Full Split Bands' I would have to agree with an AU grading, I say AU55 as well, or even a bit better.
Bit hard to see through a nice patina, but I think there is a tiny amount of wear on the highest points of the design, on both sides. Superior coin of a slightly scarcer date / mm.

Discussion is very interesting. I think, I will have this coin home next week, so I will take new pictures and I will put them here.

High AU details, dipped out, do not believe it would grade problem free.
That could just be your lighting though.
