Definitely higher than AU53. I would think it would be at minimum high AU. Please tell your friend I think he/she has excellent taste.

AU 58 because of the surfaces, luster, and eye appeal. I think when it comes to the levels of AU it's more about these things instead of wear

yeahaw!! What an amazing coin, I absolutely love the toning! Well... I love all toners.. But again wow.... This is a beauty! I'm not seeing any signs of wear either, and it appears to have good luster as well so I'm in at a minimum of 62, leaning towards a 63!! Yet again, what an amazing coin!

Beautiful coin I'm far from being an expert but I don't think this is an O-135 variety based on these two diagnostics of O-135. 1. In O-135 Star 1 is only 1/2mm from the drapery and star 13 is only 1/2 mm. from the curl. This coin shows star 1 further away from the drapery than star 13 is away from the curl. 2. In O-135 Reverse - left side of I is centered under T. This coin seems to show the left side of I aligned to the right side of T. There are 49 varieties in 1827 and most of them are square based 2. I can't see enough detail in the pics to be sure of the variety. Maybe an expert can verify that it is O-135 or some other variety?

Tom appreciated all the comments. I'm sure he'll be joining. Tom and I worked for Gold Star Estate Buying who is the one that consigned the 20 + tons of coins to stacks and Bowers. I worked for one year but Tom was there for a few years. He has a great eye for coins a beautiful collection and is one of the few people I trust with Counterfeit Detection. He will be a valued member here as his opinions will be spot on and his knowledge is quite vast. Thanks again

I haven't had the time to confirm with 100% accuracy, but right now I see O-117. Possibly an earlier die state than the pic in my book and a slightly different strike alignment. It is listed as an R-3 in my older book.

I think his think is higher. Perhaps there is only a tiny amount of wear on the high points of the hair. Only a few tiny dings, that are partly hidden by the patination. AU58.
Has residual cartwheel lustre, patination and rainbow toning in a nice combination. The first I have seen like this, in a coin of this age. I LIKE it!
This coin should be slabbed to protect it, otherwise the patination will take over. Forget what they say about the grade!

the results are in. it wouldn't let me post pics with writing NGC ms 64. You can see our friend in Fla touched up the back which made Tom angry since his instructions were submit only. but I like it better and it graded great for a coin he bought as an AU coin

Wow! Exceeded everyone's expectations! That is a beautiful coin if I say so myself. Easily a $4000 coin. Your friend got a great deal then.
