At last - got a 2014 1p in change yesterday!

DaytR - agree with you about 1976 2p's - I was making up a set from circulation a few years ago for a Spanish collector (in exchange for some Spanish euros) and 1976 was the last one I got. I wonder if some of the '1976' mintage were actually dated 1975?

I daresay the 1977 2p may be slightly scarcer than the mintage figure indicates, because lots of unofficial sets were made up out of circulation that year by dealers and collectors - partly because it was the Queen's Silver Jubilee, and also because it was the first year since decimalisation that a complete set of all denominations from the halfpenny to the 50p was issued for circulation.

Awesome news HH & Rob

Rob - thats a very interesting observation regarding 1976 2p coins , could 1976 2p coins be the crop circles of the demical coins..... & thanks for your insight regarding 1977 coinage vis-a-vis the jubilee

Well done on the 10p mate. I was at my local supermarket this morning and got 2 more 2p's.... guess one will come your way soon.

I did get a cracking condition 2000 1p in my change today - think I may keep that one.

Awesome stuff Steve, I have never got any penny from 2000 or before in such a condition but interestingly enough every now and then I come across a reddish 1996 penny ......maybe your penny came from a set

Got another penny this morning - only the second 2014 I've seen.

Hi DaytR, the 2000 dated penny sure didn't look like its been in circulation for 14 years - I wondered if it had come from a set.

Steve - I wonder if the shiny 2000 penny had just been at the bottom of a big jar for 14 years. Lots of people throw 1p and 2p coins into jars or those large size empty spirits bottles that you get in pubs. When they fill the bottle, or need the money, they take it to the bank or the nearest Coinstar machine and cash it in. I knew one elderly lady who saved lots of loose change in glass jars hidden all around her house - when she passed away (around 2001) the relative who cleared the house gave me some large-size 5p and 10p coins he'd found, as they were now obsolete. But I remember him showing me some absolutely gem uncirculated £1 coins from about 1983-5 that he simply pocketed and spent...

Thats a good point Rob, I hadn't thought of that....

It's funny you mention the £1 coins because a couple of years ago a 1983 I found was almost mint - and I myself have brought cheap coin sets of the early 80's where the pound coins are missing.

Cheers for your thoughts,
Steve :)

I finally landed a 2014 2 pence , my hardball tactics on 2 pence pieces paid off handsomely , interestingly enough I also got a 1976 2p which has been so hard to come across. The only 2 pence I havent seen in a very long time is the 2008 Ironside one ....

Here's one 2014 UK coin we're unlikely to see in circulation!

I have to laugh at The Royal Mint sometimes.

They scored a massive hit with the Pistrucci silver proof that was released to commemorate the birth and now they think anything remotely related to Prince George will be a bestseller.

I see they couldn't even be bothered to come up with a new design for it.
