Some will have a satin type finish while others will have a deep matte finish which will be dull with granular lustre.

Thanks for the answers, I will look into the book. I am thinking I will stick to certified matte proofs, I was looking around ebay and a couple that were labeled BU UNC looked just like the matte proof to me, there is an 1910 MP up right now that is raw.

MPLs have certain diagnostics (In the book) for each date and a lot of times, business strikes are mistaken for a true MPL. Be very careful buying raw from ebay and good luck in your quest.

Dewayne...sounds like you're talking about 3CN (business strikes vs. proofs being down to the diagnostics)....my type of talk!

Nice cents, a little out of my price range. It might take me a little while to complete my Lincoln proof set :( I keep going to the coin shows looking for that mis-marked proof!

I read on the PCGS board where one lucky bloke did just that. He bought a 1909 raw that ended up being a Matte Proof!! I forgot if it was a VDB though. He paid next to nothing for it, too.

Just an update, I got a 1910 MPL coming and am so excited!! I think I am happier than when I got my S-VDB. I did buy the book(if you want to call it that) on matte proofs. It basically is a reprint of an article in some magazine. The 1910 is the highest mintage, 4,000 something, but never less I am still very excited! I also think I got a great deal on it, $380. Now if only Dansco and other book makers put a spot in the books for these the prices would skyrocket.

I wouldn't buy one of those raw. Best to purchase only slbbed ones to be sure. Possible to find raw ones but unless a great price, may not be what it is being sold for. True if there was a slot in Whitman or Dansco albums the price would rise dramatically. But since there isn't, at least for now, good time to buy them.

Seeing this thread made me wonder a little more about one I have. The crispness of the design looked so good when I bought it. Probably should have it submitted to see what it grades.

coop,

Or you could just sell it to me for face value, I would even pay shipping!

just carl,

The one I did buy is raw, I am not worried though, the seller has a 10 day return policy and very good feedback. I figured for 380 bucks I would take the chance. I would like to own the rest of the series but I think the wife would not be happy if I had to re-mortgage the house for the 1909 VDB MPL.

I'd say they would skyrocket. The surfaces of the matte proofs is delicate and very prone to spotting and discoloration. Put them in Danscos and very quickly the number of nice pieces would plummet to a fraction of the small number it is today.
