1908 US $20.00 (no motto):   This is my favorite coin, even though it's not rare or valuable. In fact it's one of the commonest St. Gaudens $20's -- these are actually pre-33 bullion coins. This is my first $20 coin, and the eagle on the reverse is one of my favorite designs on any coin. I got this coin for Christmas around 1965. It cost about $60. At that time US citizens were not allowed to own gold, but we could own these because they were of "numismatic value". It was sold by some dealer in NYC graded as EF (I don't think AU was that common as a grade back then). I seem to recall that it had some sort of unappealing greenish toning at the time. After 30 years in its original envelope in a safety deposit box, it emerged with great orange toning. With any luck, I can get my avatar switched over to a portion of the back of this coin (once I find a crop that looks good at avatar size). |

I have focused on my 7070 the last couple of years. I have set a goal to finish it by the end of 2016.  There are five holes left... 1796-1807 Draped Bust Large Cent 1808-1814 Classic Head Large Cent 1840-1865 Liberty Seated dollar1866-1873 Liberty Seated dollar (Motto) 1873-1883 Trade Dollar Those three dollars scare me more than the two coppers, and those two coppers really scare me!  |

I bought a 1927-S Peace dollar today at the Tampa Bay Coin Show for $100 in AU condition. I think that was a pretty good deal. The last coin show I went to in Brandon the dealers were stuck with their marked prices give or take five dollars. My favorite coin is the one I am collecting at the time. I take a certain amount of money with me and that is what I spend because I usually have a couple of coins in mind. I saw common Saint-Gaudens $20 coins selling for about $1450. Gold on the spot market is selling for $1200 an ounce. To buy a piece of history for $250 extra does not seem so expensive. To buy one of these babies for $60 is amazing even if it was in 1960. Coin collectors should start early in life, build their collections, and then they have a pension plan they can sell off one coin at time if they like. If they feel generous they can give some to their grandchildren if the children respect the awesome gift. |
