XF Details, polished. I see obvious wear and hits from circulation.

I think it's a high-grade AU, or low-grade MS, and will be submitting it to PCGS.

You're going to be disappointed. This is a heavily-circulated, heavily-polished coin which was originally a pretty good strike. The slam-dunk evidence is in the large, lower wreath leaves - with a poor strike, the inner detail on them disappears early, especially the (viewer's) left one. Your coin shows detail remaining in those leaves, even though there's visible wear in the smaller leaves outboard of them - these don't lose detail in a weak strike, yet they've lost detail from circulation.

The same reasoning can be applied to the cotton bolls on the obverse - were it a weak strike, detail still present on your coin wouldn't be there.

Further, inside the R and 4 on the obverse, and above the E in UNITED on the reverse, you'll find evidence of why it was so heavily cleaned. And the fact that they managed to get the rest of the crud is evidence of just how hard the cleaning was.

Frankly, this is a melt coin. Don't waste the money on PCGS.

completely, it's definitely heavily worn and polished to the max... I don't really need to elaborate as to why as SsuperDdave gave a perfect explanation.

On that note, I have to add... Well said SsuperDdave, your comment was perfectly written, it's comments like that one that make this such a wonderful site. Especially for the new/newer collectors still learning the ropes.. Opposed to just saying "EF details polished" you explained your reasoning behind it and why you came to that conclusion. Which is very valuable to newer members/collectors who arnt 100% sure what to look for, so again, very well said!

Thank you for the kind words. Given the OP's stated intent to submit the coin, I felt like I needed to discourage that action in the clearest-possible terms, both for him and for those who are reading without posting. This isn't a submission-worthy coin.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, this is a bit less common than many other Morgans, and will retain some numismatic premium even in this condition. But I absolutely agree there'd be very little point to having this example certified.

Because you have received a wide variety of answers as to the grade of your coin I would suggest to you to try and take a better photo so we can better see your coin. Less glare would be good. One thing I do know is that the 94-O usually is VERY poorly struck as this coin shows.

I think we've come to a consensus NOT to submit it.
It's still worth more than melt, however, because of the scarcity of this date and mintmark, including other 1890's New Orleans dollars.

I was being a bit hyperbolic by describing it as a "melt" coin, but the images are excellent and definitive. Street value on it - I'm calling it low-XF Details - is only in the $50-60 range. And that's in a slab.

It is indeed polished to heck. I was thinking the images were just overexposed... nope. This one will be going back.
