VF 35

I have never seen toning on coin this circulated. Maybe it is AT?

I'd ask if you have ruled out the possibility of its being a contemporary counterfeit, by both weight and specific gravity. Added to the discrepancies you've described, a variance in either from the norm would be pretty conclusive.

No, I haven't. My scale is at a different house right now and I don't own any other CBHs.

I think it was circulated, then stored somewhere that toned it. Doubt it's the other way around.
That would be sad to find out that it is ATd.

Usually toning like this on a circulated coin arises from a dip and retone. However, this coin doesn't really look dipped, at least not in a long time.....so I am guessing it is from a really old dip. I like toning on circ coins, as long as it doesn't look too dipped out, and I think a TPG would grade it problem free. I dont think it will add or subtract from resale value.

I think EF-40 at least.

Many dipped old silver coins tone back with this grey/blue/purple tone. I'm not qualified to call yes or no on an old cleaning.

Any collector of CBHs sure all examples in the collection are uncleaned, cast the first stone!

I think it's an outstanding coin and and would be proud to own it.

I see no problems with this coin. I'll call it VF-30. The toning doesn't bother me in the least. Problem free Except for the scratches by the eyes may be deemed graffiti.
