Does anyone think it could be natural toning? The guy explained to me how the colors and luster on this one looked very real. And MUCH more expensive one I almost bought he said may not have been natural and maybe was cleaned. He seems to be honest and has been doing it for a while, but I just dont know on this one. I sure hope its natural.

Though I have no expertise in IHCs, the toning looks fine IMO. The red may still exist along the edges and devices because the edges and devices protect these areas from being touched/ and or contaminated by substances that facilitate toning or discoloration. I would be more concerned about the dings or divots around 6 o'clock.
Edit: It seems like you have an honest dealer. Keep frequenting him and asking many, many questions (if he's willing and free to do so!). You can learn a lot!
I think you have a great pair of coins there!

ErrorCoins- Thats sort of what the coin dealer was saying. This is a real nice coin... unless its its color is fake, in which case I will get rid of it. I only want authentic uncleaned coins.
I think FE cent is nothing special but a decent looking example to be my first one.
Thanks for the kind words. I am still learing and thats why I love to hear as many thoughts as possible.

Flying Eagle- VF/EF. IHC- AU and I agree it looks NT'ed. Nice coins Quote: I only want authentic uncleaned coins. Just in case you don't know.. more than 99% of coins from pre 1900 have been cleaned at one point or another (most likely more than one time). And likewise more modern coins, though the percentage drops a little. Up until quite recently cleaning was not only acceptable but encouraged. It more depends on "how" it was cleaned and if it's deemed market acceptable or not (hairlines vs. a light dip etc). I'm in no way saying I condone cleaning or encourage it, I just thought I'd let you know in case you didn't know that "most" older coins are cleaned.
