Yeah, I looked in my car, and under my seat and stuff. I looked around my house and my desk in case it might've fallen out of my pocket randomly, but I really don't think it did. I honestly don't remember it being in my pocket while I was actually at the flea market though. Now that I think about it, it was either pickpocketed from me (does that even happen) or I simply left it on my coin dealer's desk. If so, I can just go back next week and find out what's what.

I'm calming down now, though. I don't want to let something stupid like this Ruin my day. I'll just use it as a learning experience (put all non-pocket change coins in a zipper pocket!) and hopefully this can be avoided altogether in the future.

You probably left it at the dealer. Hopefully he'll be there next week. I've sometimes paid for stuff and then completely forgot to take the object until the clerk said something.

Sorry to hear about that. That a lot of money to lose. Check back with the guy next week.

I've put a nice coin item in my pocket and gotten mix with regular change, then accidentally gave the coin away as I was giving someone change for a purchase.

Now I carry a tiny sack in pocket if I am going somewhere that I may find a coin to buy. I put it in the tiny sack seperate from any loose and it's never happened again. Also watch for holes in your pockets. If I forget my sack I'll put it in my wallet where there'a a little zipper pocket and then slip it in there.

I really hope you find your coin! If not, you just have to let it go. I have goofed up in much bigger ways, more than a few times, when I really wished I could turn the clock back a day to fix things.

Also I had a similar experience with my Dad. Back about 1970, when I was a kid and excited about coins, my Dad ridiculed me for paying 50 cents for a high grade steel cent. "How could anyone be stupid enough to pay 50 cents for a penny?" The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It probably is with the dealer, but to play it safe double check your pockets, cuffs, or anywhere before you wash your clothes.

Sometimes when I wear jeans I accidentally put stuff in that little pocket above the front pocket and think I lost it only to have it show up in the washing machine. FYI, a $50 bill does not like Tide detergent or my washing machine (Doh!)

P.S. You can't be stupid because according to my wife I already have dibs on that title.

I love you guys, and this forum. It feels like a family, it's awesome. Thanks everyone for your input.

I've decided on getting a fanny pack for putting my coins in.

Just kidding! One of those things would look silly on a 16-year old dude.

TimJing, was it in a 2 x 2 holder? Usually that's how raw coins come, make them considerably more bulky than pocket change. What you should do every time is ask for a bag to put them in.

And if you know you might be coin shopping a fanny pack isn't a bad idea.

As far as your father not understanding, I'm afraid that's how the hobby goes. I'm 33 years old and still a couple of my coworkers say I'm "retarded" for spending the amount of money I do on coins. It's pure ignorance.

I feel so terrible for you, losing the coin. It's awful to lose something that you not only really liked, but cost a lot of money. I really hope that you did leave it with the dealer, and that he's got it safely put aside for you for the next time you see him.

As to the fanny pack, who cares about how silly it does or doesn't look? I love the things, even though I know they probably look retarded on a round thirty-something female. They're useful, and what else matters?

Haha, yeah, I'll run the fanny pack thing by my girlfriend next time we decide to go to the flea market together. I'm sure she'll love the notion.

And yeah, it was in a 2x2 holder. Usually when I get coins I get a little manila envelope type thing to slip them into, but I didn't get one of those today. Oh well.
Rest in Peace

Hey Tim, in Oz we call them bum bags. Your American name has a completely different meaning out here:)
Sorry to hear about the coin.

We've all done stupid things like that. Most people either forget it or pretend it never happened. I carry a camera type bag and have put coins in there when at a coin show. Don't know how many times I thought I lost it, forgot it or something and then it turned up months later. Getting old and weak eye sight. Last week I handed a store clerk a $100 bill thinking it was a $10. Luckily she said don't you have anything smaller? I didn't even know I had a bill on me that size. Don't know how many times I've gone out to my garage and when I get there stand there wondering why I went there. I make list of things for the store and forget the list and at the store have no idea of what I wanted. I just found a $5 bill in a grocery bag where I put it a few weeks ago because I was to lazy to put it in my pocket.
Yes, yes don't feel bad about that loss. Even though you sound young, your still getting old too. The thing to do is hopefully that guy at the flea market is still there and is honest.

I did something like this when I was about 12-13 years old, I bought a colonial era piece of paper money, United Colonies $4 from 1776. I remember being amazed at it's age etc. and I liked to look at it often. So I had it laying around the living room. Then it turned up missing, and was gone for several months. I figured that either my brother pilfered it and denied it, or that one of our neighbours had lifted it.

About a year later I lifted up the sofa to check for change in the dust cover, and there it was. I had apparently been looking at it while laying on the sofa, and left it there and it slipped in betwixt the cushions into the dust cover.
