Keep the guesses coming. I know there are some Morgan guys lurking out there that haven't yet chimed in.

I'm extremely new to this, but when I compare to the Photograde pictures, I get MS62 or maybe 63. Either way, I like it!

I got the coin in yesterday and it really is a beauty. Most of the guesses were a bit low, but a few of you got it.

How do you feel about the grade? I felt good about it when I bought it, and now that I have it in hand and have compared it to my MS-64s (this is my first MS-65 Morgan), I still feel good about the grade. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

The only thing I don't like (and I don't see that anyone else has mentioned it) is what looks to be a bit of flatness over the ear - almost expected of a New Orleans strike, but atypical for an 1881-S, and usually limits the grading upside to MS64.

This looks like a rare over-graded Morgan in an old rattler. I'm not seeing 65.

65 is what it looks like in the images. The luster is strong and the strike is all there.

Grading from images is tough. This one shows great luster and excellent eye appeal to go along with it's hammered strike. It is not over graded and would almost certainly grade 65 again at PCGS or another TPG.

This is a recent pickup. I think I got it for a decent price considering the look of it and the fact that it is in a rattler holder, which seem to carry a premium. These are the seller's pics which were actually really good (much better than mine would be). Let me know what you think. Thanks.

May I please ask who was the third Party Grader?

Thanks

Most Morgans in rattlers at this point are overgraded because people know they're maxed out, so there is no point to cracking and resubbing... Most that were undergraded were cracked out 10-15 years back.

If you want your coin with the same grade but in a new holder, but don't think it'll stay 65, you can always submit to reholder.

No, this is incorrect. Accurately graded and under graded are two different things. To say that most rattlers have over graded coins in them is wrong. Most rattlers contain accurately graded coins.

Also, many rattlers have sub-$100 coins in them and it makes no sense to even try an upgrade. A common Morgan (and most common coins) graded below MS64 offer no incentive to even try an upgrade.

And again, the OP's coin is a solid 65 in the images. The area above the ear looks like a scuff on the slab - this coin has everything it needs to be a 65 today or any day.

Seems like PCGS missed it on this one, sure is a lot on facial marks for an MS-65

with Indian, I'm not seeing a 65 today in this one at all , definitely too many facial marks alone, but together with the light hits in front of the nose/mouth it's a deal breaker on 65 for me. Were it one or the other than possibly.. but not in both main focal areas. I'd say a solid 64 but again, a 65 is a reach... I'm just not seeing it..
