Tom that is a flawed comparison. You are comparing a large coin with a small coin. details are generally better on large coins

Oh, OK. I rather thought it was down to the amount of visible wear compared to a 'perfect' coin fresh from the mint. Therefore grade wouldn't vary with denomination.

OK, some denominations were more useful and so circulated more and are therefore more difficult to find in higher grades. But I figured 'conditional rarity' shouldn't affect the grade given.

But then hammered coins are my interest. I pay very little interest to the grades given to the coins that interest me by others. They either satisfy me or they don't. This modern stuff seems complicated me, so apologies if I confused things!

The coin is absolutely beautiful looks EF and I wouldn't object to it being in an AU53 holder tho I wouldn't either be surprised to see it in an AU50 holder.

Certainly will. For Peter and myself especially! Because I think by British standards it's very far off what it clearly achieves by Australian ones.

For some more food for thought, this is an example that PCGS graded AU55- I think if you compare the XF40, the coin in question, and the AU55, I think that the OP's coin is in between

I personally think this coin was undergraded and should have gone AU58.They might have downgraded it due to questionable colour
