Thanks everyone, my previous oldest bills had been 1934 series, but as the only thing older than this would be a large note, I think the only way I'd ever do better now is a lower #!

Here is an idea of value http://www.uscurrencyauctions.com/$50notes.htm but with all the problems it has I would guess $55-$60. Nice find though.

I always hold onto silver certificates when I find them regardless of condition but I have never found a gold certificate. Cool!

Technically, it's a Federal Reserve Note that is redeemable in gold, not a Gold Certificate. Gold Certificates were direct obligations of the U.S. Treasury, while FRN's are obligations of the Federal Reserve System.
