if you would have been happy with $2k then I would suggest putting it in a premier auction house and seeing where it goes. even in todays depressed market you will get more than what those dealers offered you!
just a suggestion but they have a god rep and large client base

Just had a response from walter eigner at numisbid. He confirmed it is vf20 grade and says it would retail at $80,000.

if you are willing to send it to Walter you would probably get a better result than a non Australian auction. its a better market here for aus coins and Walter is a good auctioneer well known in the community here. heck why don't you fly over with the coin and have a holiday! you can afford it now :)

I have been told that after auction fees etc..... I should expect $45000, I know this is alot of money still but its a massive hit to take if its worth nearly double that. Any suggestions on how or where to go about selling it independantly or would you advise otherwise

Hi.

I think it comes down to how much you need the money right now.
If you go to auction it could possibly achieve valuation quoted.
There are a few in the current Noble Auction that may be worth keeping an eye on before making a decision.

Walter Eigner's outfit takes 15% selling fee, so from the expected $80k that would leave you with $68K.

You could always put it in a safe deposit box with a bank until you explore the best options. There is no rush.

Congratulations on your lucky find.

Not to rush at this stage and keep it safe would be the best advice for you at this stage. Do your own research about selling options available and fees. Congrats with such a special discovery.

One thing you might want to keep in mind when consigning it to an auction house is exposure. There are cheaper options available, but some of these places aren't as well known or don't attract a strong clientele. So this could result in the item being sold for less then it is worth, which kind of negates the lesser fees.

Auction houses advertise rates for sellers but if you have an expensive item they will cut that rate or make it zero (assuming they charge a buyers premium). I believe numisbid charges 10% commission and no buyers premium in contrast to the above poster who suggested 15%.

My Two Cents worth a coin that rare doesn't need to be slabbed and personally I would look at Baldwin, heritage, noble or IAG auctions, they probably sell the most $50k+ australian coins.

yeh Baldwin, heritage, nobles have been ripping people of on commissions for a while now
they claim to get better results but then take 40% of the value of the coin in buyers/sellers cost
I don't think that they would get a 30% premium on the coin compared to Numisbid
hell get it slabbed and sell it on ebay and I think you would still end up with more money.
but if you sell it in the uk you will be cutting your throat on this one. much more buyers in Australia for a coin like this with the cash to spend
also this coin is expensing because it is rare! the next year , not so much. if they find a hoard then you are looking at 1/10 of what it is worth now. if it was me I would sell this then buy $50k worth of gold

but in the end its your coin your choice
