Go back to them and instead of being argumentative, pretend like you're helping them out. "Somebody underneath you made this mistake so let's clean it up together." , "We should get this corrected quickly before your boss notices." , "I wouldn't want you to lose your lob over this." , "This could create an international incident." , "Can I talk to your higher-ups?" , "I have it in writing; let me email it to you quickly so we can review the law together."

Get to the bottom of it. 999 fine gold is tax exempt in Canada, but I thought that was if you bought the piece in Canada, not from overseas. Dunno... Send them an invoice for madeup stuff - it seems to be okay in their playbook.

My silver & gold Donald was just delivered to my home and my granddaughter signed for it and the Fedex guy said nothing about any additional taxes or brokerage fees. So I guess that's good unless they bill me later.

UPDATE: well, I had to call Fedex ROD dept (don't ask me what ROD stands for), and I simply told them that it was a gold coin and should be tax exempt. she said she would put a note on my file and shouldn't have any issue when I pick it up. very nice, very professionnal... now let's see how it goes when I pick it up after work tonight.

Confirmed... no HST or brokerage charges on delivery...but if I recall a few years ago I got a bill from them a few weeks later and threatened to send it to collection if I didn't pay it. So I'm not out of the woods yet ! lol
It's strange that some get charged and some don't ?

$45 is not nothing. That's an extra premium on a cheap ounce!

@Libertad I can confirm 100% that buying within Canada or from outside has no impact, pure gold and silver are TAX FREE (other than BC where numismatic value is taxed) and DUTY FREE as well, so no duties in importing them.

@Dominic WOW, I must say I'm impressed, I always had bad bad experience from FEDEX in this issue (when they taxed/duty it... as it's not always the case).

The good news is all these taxes will be eliminated once the war is over.

UPDATE: well I picked up my coin last night. no issue whatsoever. just had to sign on the dotted line. everything went very smoothly. and I don't think i'll get a bill later since the invoice that said I owed them 116.66$ was stamped "paid" on it. overall, very happy.

now about the coin! I love it! very nice, shinny, and high quality packaging. COA 0295. I wish I had gotten a lower one like my steamboat willie where I managed to snag a COA 0030!

let me know how your pick up turned out.

Sometimes you don't have a say when it comes to shipping. Just appeal and wait 2 weeks for an answer.

I received my coins today and was not dinged for any extra charges. There was a cleared sticker on the box. Also the invoice on the front says, Collectible Numismatics, Carriage Value: 0.00 AUD.

My package came from the Perth Mint. A question for those got extra charges - was it from Perth Mint or NZ Mint?

BTW, I lived in BC, so I could have potentially been charged PST.
