I haven't gotten too into toned coins or what to look for, but I would jump at the first ones toning if I ever personally saw it, I love that backwards "bloom" of color outwards in all direction

I think the eye appeal on the first one is by far the best. I can't comment on artificial toning or not because I'm no good there. I just REALLLLY like that first one.

I like the obverse die cracks on #4 but #1 has the best all around look. #2 and #3 look like they are recovering from a dip with the halos around the stars. I really don't care for that look myself.

Thanks guys. It looks like the verdict is for #1. He is asking $700 for it. Fair price?

I went with #1. The toning is pleasing to my eye.

I liked the die cracks on #4 too but the blue color bothered me.

Well Johnny, looking in the good old Coins Magazine, it'd need to be AU-50 for 825, so if it is AU ranger like you said you'd probably be paying fair.

You probably know way more than me, though.

I'm a number three kinda guy. It obviously was an integral part of someone else's album-held collection in the distant past and now you have the opportunity to crack it out and merge it into yours. PG

with paleoguy45, I like #3 because the only toning that I really like is album toning around the edge. Maybe that's just me, but I'm also not a very good judge of artificial toning so I stick with album toning.

Unless they are in one of the top tier TPG holders I would assume they are all either cleaned and/or AT. Given that, I think #2 has the best overall eye appeal.

Ooops, forgot #3 is in an ANACS holder -- still like #2 best.

Thanks again for all of your support. I worked out a deal with the seller on coin #1 for $700. I do fear artificial toning, but he assures me that the toning is from being in an album. I will have a better idea when it arrives. My guess is that the coin has been dipped, and then retoned; because I doubt that the coin is completely unmessed with.....but I am ok with a coin that has been dipped and then naturally retoned after the dip....just not ok with a coin that has intentionally been "baked" or something like that to produce the toning. This is a risky purchase, but I do have a return policy and I will provide better pictures upon it's arrival.

John, got to this party a little late, but I like #1 the best as well.

I wonder what magic the TPG's use to tell between AT and natural ?

I'm old school so I go for blast white.
So for circulated coins gray is what I go for.
(Guess which one I voted for.)
