it looks like an altered 1944. too large a space between the 9 and what was the 4 (but now a 1) as stated by others above.

Watch those shady online sellers. Tell us who seller is so we can avoid them.

Thanks for all the responses to my question.

I hope to add a VF 1914-D to my collection later this year. It's been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. I'm saving my money now.

But I want to make sure I get an authentic example.

Even if it was genuine, it would be impossible to authenticate based on that one horrible photo.

How can you tell it is fake? I have a 1914d and am wondering what to look for that makes it fake as opposed to real. I actually have a whole set of wheat pennies my wife inherited. It is a complete set from 1909 -1941

Well in this case you can't without better pictures.

-----"How can you tell if it's fake?"

You could play a football game in that huge area between the "9" and the second "1" in the date. The "D" is too big. If it WAS a legit coin the pictures would be better and it would be in a slab.

That's how I tell it's a fake.

Even with the crappy pic I can tell it's simply an altered 1944D. Do the collecting world a favor and cut it in half.
