I second Hondo's book recommendation! It's a fascinating read on the whole mining culture of the Carson City era. Van Ryzin is a great writer and author. You can find this book fairly cheap lately on ebay, surprising as some of his other books have really started to rise in price as they are now out of print. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crime-of-18...400733184516That one above is super cheap! I paid more than $50 for my copy when it came out. There are two others up for sale on ebay now from $40-60. Get a copy and read it you won't regret the time spent, if you have any interest in mining and the old west era after the West coast gold rush turned to the silver rush.

Are SA coins hard to come by. I figure to pick up some local currency. Just not much of a world coin person. And I have heard the same thing you have said from everyone I have talked to that have been there. We are staying at the falls for a day or two before we go out to the safari. Should be a pretty cool adventure.

Africa is the place to be mate its very beautiful relaxed and you will come back regularly because of the cheap prices your dollar is ten times stronger than ZAR so Zim it will be what? Maybe 50 times stronger haha but Africa is the cradle of life.....so all I want to say is WELCOME HOME friend!!

ASEnut, I know a lot of my non-American friends have no idea of the scale or size of the United States. I have had people think they were going to fly into New York in the morning, rent a car and be in Idaho in the after noon.
You say that you have never been to Zimbabwe, and it is only 600 km (372 miles) away. Carson City is over 2,500 miles (4023 km) from Philadelphia. I live in Boise, Idaho and the next major metropolitan area is Portland, which is 430 miles (692 km) away. So while the Comstock Lode was huge, it did take a while to transport silver around in those days.

I would rather go to cape town or on the coast than go to Zim, its not one of my places of interest. But the cape has wine routes and table mountain.....best place in ZAR

It was probably very dangerous also to travel with all that silver

Quote: It was probably very dangerous also to travel with all that silver As well guarded as those shipments were, it was probably far more dangerous to try to hijack one, the mythology of western films and television shows notwithstanding.

If memory serves, I believe the very reason the Carson City mint was formed to cut down on the amount of silver being stolen from trains on the way to the San Francisco mint that originated in Nevada.

Actually, the operation of the Carson City mint was more due to political than practical considerations. The government quickly discovered that sending bullion from the Comstock to the more efficient San Francisco mint actually saved money. As it turned out, more silver was pilfered within the Carson City mint than was ever lost from those shipments.
