Ehhhh...not bad, I would like a little stronger rivet on the shield at 7 to 8 o'clock.

Who am I kidding...she's a beauty of a Type III.

I absolutely love this coin and would love to own it as it is better than the 1930 I own. I do want to offer a personal anecdote on why I doubt this will grade near top pop.

I dealer friend of mine once acquired an original roll of this exact date. 1930 is probably the most common date out there in high grades and is usually well struck. We both carefully observed the roll and I would estimate about half of the coins therein looked as good as this one. We thought we had some 66's and possible 67's enough to effect the population numbers. Most of the coins were submitted to PCGS. We were both shocked when they generally came back as 64FH and 65FH. There was a single one that hit 66FH. Also a few weren't granted the FH designation that we thought deserved it. I think TPGs are furiously tough on this date or possibly all high grade SLQs.

The other possible issue I might raise is that these pictures are probably not conducive to deciphering between high grade. There are too many shadows and not enough detail. I see many parts of that coin that look mushy. Now I know they won't be mushy in hand, but tiny marks and issues are also being hidden from the viewer.

You're gonna hate me, but I'm going to say this is a 65FH and I believe 64FH is more likely than 66FH based off the fact that I have personally seen this exact date get butchered in the past. The coin is certainly worth sending in and I'd love to see the result. I'm at 65FH though.

No worries, I appreciate your insight :-)

Here are a few more pics of the obverse with different angles.

The new pictures are better and the coin does, indeed, look even better. Now I believe 66FH is in the cards. I think that is what it should grade, but I believe I remember seeing a coin similar to that from the roll I mentioned that came back 65FH and myself and the dealer were both surprised.

I really think you should send it in. It has great eye appeal and would be a 4 figure coin at 66FH or close to it at 65FH.

The pics don't show for me darnit!

I have a ? for SLQ afficianados.

I would think that the feathers on the eagle's body on reverse would be a key grading point of emphasis, since that seems to be a weak point on this coin in general.

Yet it doesn't seem to matter in slabbed ones I look at. I've seen 62's with much more detail in that area than 66's. It is like that isn't a grading factor at all - yet IMO it seems like an area that only really well struck coins show great detail in? I only own a couple and admit I haven't read/studied up on this coin at all! So is that area just ignored by SLQ graders?

Strike isn't as important to grading as luster, contact marks, and eye appeal with grading ANY coin. More detail is lost as a die wears out, right? Well, luster also increases as a die wears down, so a lot of coins that have lots of luster often may not have the best strike details.

That's why absolutely hammered coins that have great luster are so desirable. It's an uncommon pairing in the process of coin production.

Did you ask the dealer why he hadn't sent it in to be graded himself?

Actually, it's in my type set at the moment. Still one of my favorites.
