People spoon a coin by hitting their edges to raise it, then drill the middle to get a ring. You can google it for more detail, since I'm not very good at describing it. If the diameter is bigger it might be in a bezel, because Dryer Coins have a smaller diameter.

ahhh! spooning a coin..that's interesting. I make jewelry so I'll have to check into that in more detail. I'm still confused why it is gold/brass in color. It does not sound like copper or brass when tapped or lightly dropped.

Exactly 3 grams? How many decimals is your scale to? They're technically brass/bronze in composition, and they can tone yellow. If it's too far off normal toning colour, it might have been plated. Look at this post, it might explain why it doesn't sound copper: https://goccf.com/t/181567#1673407, I'm quite certain it's because of the extra thick bit.

scale goes to .00. It is definitely a bright brass color. The photo is poor because I didn't put it in my lightbox, and used incandescent lighting instead. Plating is possible! I never thought of that. It's just a big mystery now that's driving me nuts.

That's strange, a normal 1959 would weigh 3.11 grams. If it was put in a bezel, it would weigh more. What does the reverse look like?

the reverse looks just like a current penny with lincoln seated in the memorial.. I will post better pics tomorrow under a new thread because I don't see where I can add a photo in the reply box here.

A normal 1959 U.S.Cent should weight 3.1grams.To me your coin looks like it is in a bezel of some kind but you would think that would add weight. The color most likely is plating. Will be interesting to read what others have to say. John1

It's a bezel placed around the rim of the coin. On the reverse there should be an eyelet that may have broken off. May we see the reverse? as far as weight discrepancy goes I have no explanation but it is in a bezel. Here's one I found a few years ago metal detecting https://goccf.com/t/133235

No, there is no bezel placed on this coin. I am a jeweler and I can assure you that there is no bezel.

I agree with all those who've concluded that this is a case of post-strike damage. The edge appears to have been rolled and squeezed in a mechanical device that simultaneously reduced the coin's diameter.

Yes, but the coin's diameter is larger than that of other pennies...by a millimeter. So the diameter isn't reduced.
