I saw your post in Spud's thread, as I assume you saw my answer to him. The mark on the nose can be seen in the sellers pic so I would not try to say it is not as described. I would most likely contact the seller in the hopes of agreeing that the mark is a little worse than you thought. If he is agreeable than all is good. If he is a disagreeable sort I would keep it and see it as lesson # 2397 in coin collecting. Good luck.

Hmmm Jon this is a problem. I basically had the same problem but a little different. You know how I like toned coins so I bought a 1925 Peace dollar that was supposed to have dark green toning. When I got it I didn't even see a hint of even light green. So the seller offered to return my money plus return postage. The coin was beautiful though not toned. So to make a long story short Jon I kept it. I know not what his return policy is but if they do have one you can keep it or return it. To me Jon it sounds like your unhappy with the coin so I would suggest that you return it cause it will always bug you if you don't. Life is too short not to be happy especially when you work so hard on your collection.

If he has a return policy, send it in. But not because it was not as described. You can plainly see the hit on the nose in the sellers pic.

I think this coin describes the classic difference between sellers and buyers. Sellers want their coin to look as good as possible to bring in the most money. Buyers want a photo that shows the coin to it's worst possible advantage to save money. As long as the pic wasn't photo shopped then all is well.

And since its in a holder it WILL sell to the next buyer, who just wants the label!

The hit is not clear in the seller's pic if you ask me. If asked to grade it, without the story and only the sellers pic, I doubt it would be noticed. Even if it was, no one would think it was that deep from the image.

It all boils down to "do you like the coin?". If Yes, then keep it. If No, then return it. From your comments it is clear that you DON'T like the coin. So the proper course of action is obvious.

That hit is NOT at all clear in the sellers pic. The only thing showing is a minor ding, not the divot that is actually there. I would send it back with no hesitation.

Thanks guys. I will chew on it tonight and make a decision. If I keep it, I will need to accept that it is a nice 63, regardless of the hit. I do feel it is a nice 63.

Under no magnification, that nose hit is the only flaw visible. The scar on the cheek and the hairlines are not visible unless magnified. The hairlines are not visible (to these old eyes) even under 10X.

But that nose hit is easily seen.

If I decide that I will never be happy . . . . . not because it is not nice or that it is not a 63 or that it is not worth what I spent . . . . as it is all of those things.

If I do not keep it it will be because when I view it I will always (I will probably not ever upgrade this slot again!) I will always be reminded of the disappointment when I pulled it out of the package.

just to play devils advocate here. Look again at the pictures the OP posted. If you look around the neck/collar area of the coin, the sellers images clearly show what appears to be a dot shaped ding, but the OPs pictures don't show a ding at all. Any image you take of a coin, depending on angle of the light and camera will accentuate some things and hide others. Is the ultimate consequence of imaging a three dimensional object.

It's hard to buy coins online sometimes when you're at the mercy of lighting and the camera lens. Add in a seller who takes hundreds of pictures and maybe even doesn't have the greatest eyesight himself and it's easy for the seller himself to miss these things.

That nose divot is about as obvious in the seller's picture as the cheek gouge is in this one:

What do you mean you can't see it?

If it's going to bother you then you should definitely return it. The seller should not give you any trouble over it, hopefully.. the picture is the only thing you have to base your purchase decision on, and it did not tell the whole story.

i think you bought a graded coin and paid for a graded coin...
You could get a raw coin from a shop that is in just as good condition, without having to pay for the slab.

I rarely buy slabbed coins, and then only if the price is what I might pay for the raw version in that condition.
I have a bunch of very nice IKE DCAM's and Kennedy DCAM's and CAM's. The aren't graded but I know what a dcam looks like....

My point is, you bought a sealed coin in a slab, you really have no complaint... if the seller is nice enough to take it back, that is fine. otherwise, you own it.

If I were selling slabbed coins, I would have a no return policy. After all, I am not an approval service.

As far as I am concerned raw or graded makes no impact on this issue. None.

If you are not happy with the coin, you should just return or if you paid a good enough price, just resell it on your own... I've purchased a few where I like that and most of the time I just resold it...

That being said, when I'm selling, it doesn't matter to me if it's raw or graded... There are plenty of coins you see in person that just don't look as good as the photos, and plenty which photos cannot do the coin justice in hand, if someone is not happy with the coin in hand, they can certainly return it no problem.

I have invested enough emotional capital in this one.

I am going to offer it to a couple friends (at my cost) and if no takers it is going back whence it came. Actually I have already done that.

I suppose the clock is ticking on a return. I have not had it a week yet though.

As this developed, I realize that the important thing is whether or not I am going to be happy in the long run. The answer is no. I will always carry that moment of disappointment when I pulled it from the package. Every time I look at it All I WILL SEE is that divot.

Whether to return, pass to a friend, or sell on the market is secondary. Unless I wanted to punish the seller (still I do not believe the deceit was intentional so that is not a factor) it makes no difference. Heck, if I use his photo, I might make a few bucks. JUST KIDDING!! Sorta . . . .

Great fun! Thanks all for the opinions. Good variety. Some I agree with, some have changed my outlook a bit. Some have me scratching my head. All are respected.

Now that it's over for me, I'm glad I sent mine back. Half the fun of collecting these nice coins is in the thrill of the hunt. But our collection will bennifiet from us being picky. Be picky my friend!
