Quote: and has anyone ever found one "in the wild"? Yes, one piece has been found in a group of circulated pieces received from a bank. So there are probably others out there as well. But the chances of finding one are VERY slim. Even if all of the Cheerios dollars were the prototype rev, and ALL of them were dumped into circulation, and all you have to search through were the 2000 P dollar (The best possible odds), you would still expect to see one out of every 70 bags (140,000 coins). If you had to search through all the Sac dollars (not including the NA dollars) made for circulation you would have to search 130 bags (260,000 coins). Add in the NA and President dollars and you are probably looking at more than twice as many bags. And it gets even worse when you consider that not all the Cheerios dollars had the prototype rev, and not all of them were dumped into circulation. You would probably have to go through around 500 bags, a literal one in a million chance. (And all that assumes you never get the same coins twice.)

Out of 5,500, I think about 80 have been submitted for grading. The rest were either broken out and spent, or are still sitting in a closet somewhere.
The $25k figure is in line with articles I have read, but it's important to keep in mind that with a known population of fewer than 100, every additional Cheerios dollar put on the market will impact the value of all others--simple supply and demand.

Pretty esoteric. Not sure the scarcity justifies the price, as I can't see a large collector base. If my memory is correct, the Cheerios dollars have a different finish than the ones put in circulation. Once in a while an unopened box of these special Cheerios goes on sale on ebay, but the vast majority of them have only a Lincoln Cent in them instead of the dollar coin and the Lincoln is indistinguishable from the one put in circulation.

Quote: If my memory is correct, the Cheerios dollars have a different finish than the ones put in circulation The Cheerios dollars had the standard finish. Some 2001 coins got out that had an "experimental rinse" http://www.coinfacts.com/silver_dol...al_rinse.htm

And the 5000 coins given to the designer also had a different finish (burnished)

^^^ That was actually a genius move on her part. By having them all slabbed and numbered as part of a series, they sold like hotcakes at $200 each when they went up for auction. Prices on ebay are now in the $800 range per coin. All that, and the original intent was to write her a check for $5000 for winning the design contest.

I saw one go for $30 on ebay last year. It lasted maybe 15 minutes as a BIN.

It's been years, where are they all? The total number of graded Cheerios dollars of all 3 TPG'ers doesn't come close to 5,500!

I would imagine that a lot of them got taken out of the box of cereal and spent right away.

Quote: I would imagine that a lot of them got taken out of the box of cereal and spent right away. I would agree with that but again, where are they all? Not floating around in circulation... Why? Because you rarely, "if ever" see them in circulation! So if no one is looking for them, they must be sitting in banks somewhere, right?... or grandma's sock draw? For the amount of publicity this coin has gotten over the years and considering it's value, it's had to believe more haven't shown up! Some people have suggested, they are sitting in peoples collections or in dealers inventories raw and ungraded. If you or I had one, are you telling me we wouldn't have it graded? Something is not right with the numbers here! Does anyone else have a theory or opinion on this?

Quote: So if no one is looking for them, they must be sitting in banks somewhere, right?... or grandma's sock draw? Based on the evidence, I believe that this is exactly the reason why more have not shown up. I also believe that as the population continues to rise, the value is not likely to increase. Quote: Some people have suggested, they are sitting in peoples collections or in dealers inventories raw and ungraded. If you or I had one, are you telling me we wouldn't have it graded? Dealers would certainly have them graded. As for collectors, many including myself wouldn't because they are so easy to identify. Unfortunately, I had to buy mine graded from an auction.

I don't believe most dealers know, understand or care about errors or varieties. You are a knowledgeable collector, like me. So if we had a raw enhanced tail feathers Cheerios dollar and wanted to sell it, we would need to find a knowledgeable buyer. Most collector (in my opinion) are not that knowledgeable. Most collectors would want to see it graded in a slab to prove it's genuine before buying it. Plus, if I (we) thought we had a super high grade raw one, I would want to have it graded..... Wouldn't you?
