Thanks for the tips CC... Yes indeed regarding the larger than usual turn out anticipated this year for the War Memorial ceremonies for obvious reasons...100th and 75th anniversaries of the great wars and most recent tragic events in that spot - Love that idea Gatewest about buying a round for the boys!! Good on your girl rjlavioe... Weather forecast calls for cold winds with rain or flurries on the 11th...which most of us should be able to handle - good primer as old man winter cometh...
We had a little wet snow today - can't stop winter I guess.
Coincidently, I once lived near Point Pleasant Park and certainly recall the closures etc. in NS.
Here in Ottawa, it is a city by-law that most stores must remain closed until 12:30 but schools are open and non retail business remaining working. I think (and hope) that most take a moment at 11 o'clock.
It seems very likely that by 2015, Remembrance Day will be a national stat holiday.
It's still surprising to me that Remembrance Day is not a holiday. I live in Saskatchewan, and it's been a holiday here for as long as I can remember. Every year at the arena is a big ceremony in the morning, so it's nice to have the day off work/school to go (for those that want to). I don't go every year. It's more like every fourth year or so. November has tended to be a very busy month University-wise. And, because we have a 'holiday' they add on extra readings since 'we'll have the time'. Not exactly the point of Remembrance Day. Oh well. I had an uncle who was in the Juno Beach campaign on D-Day. He survived, but he never liked to talk about the war. No one else in my family was military. I hope everyone enjoys the day and takes at least some time to consider what it stands for. :)
Wlouison: It is quite common and quite understandable for vets to not want to talk about those incredibly difficult moments from their past. And indeed, Nov 11th should be a national shut down day...right across the nation...all businesses shut down...out of respect! Past due!!
Yes, weather should be fine-rain, snow or shine-will be a huge gathering in Ottawa - no doubt, and indeed...will be a special ceremony...rightfully so. And yes... Lest We Forget!!
Get video CC Ottawa , very touching brought a tear to my eye. Talking with my mother today, she told how when she was young my great grandfather would demostrate how to salute and march. He too didn't talk much about WWI, he was living in Poland at the time. He and his daughter my baba came to Canada in late 1920's for a better life. I can't imagine leaving your wife and other children behind to move to Canada. Unfortunately my family never talked about those times and reasons.
A very appropriate coin commens, to for today. It's on my wish list.
I was fortunate today to have been able to watch the television coverage of the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa today.
It was a very moving experience as it always is, but this year's was particularly special. There were so many veterans, active service men and women, as well as tens of thousands of ordinary citizens present. All were there to take part in the poignancy and seriousness of the event, yet showing the unity that all Canadians must feel on such a solemn occasion.
The wonder of what a great country we have, thanks to those who have worn, and do wear the uniform, was as clear as the beautiful sunny day.
I wish everyone a memorable and enjoyable Remembrance Day, as we remember the brave soldiers and family members who have gave so much, to make today's Canada possible!! I didn't know all of Canada didn't have the day off. Very surprised to learn it wasn't a holiday in the nations capital. Hopefully soon it will be a national holiday!!
Reporting directly from the War Memorial in Ottawa... At sunset hour large crowds still lingering around the cenotaph, many still laying down their poppies, taking photos and conversing with men in uniform. It was a very poignant day...witnessing hundreds of war vets marching in line as part of the ceremony, stoic faces, as always,...as they stood for well over an hour on their feet...unwavering as the service was longer than usual this year... Great tribute for them... Statutory holiday or not - these vets need to acknowledged throughout the year. Day trip to Ottawa with young nephew included visit at RCM after service, where he selected on his own - two coins; 2014 silver dollar commemorative declaration of war and, colored "wait for me, daddy". Once again, Lest We Forget!!
At 7 pm, we took our Cub Scout pack to the war memorial, laid a wreath and then walked them around the memorial, and discussed the different dates of the wars on it (I am a Cub Scout leader and this is something we do every year). There were still a good number of people at the memorial, and a ton of poppies. When we "packed" our Cubs (which is bringing them in a circle and includes singing of our national anthem), several of the bystanders joined us in the singing O Canada in the cold evening air...
