Never seen a coin like this ? It looks authentic so if the price is not high I would get it.

I can kind of tell why you're thinking it's Byzantine, but to be honest it looks far too crude.
If it was from a several centuries earlier, I would've said "barbarous imitation", but by that point there aren't many barbarians around to imitate Byzantine coins (that I know of at least); and, well, much like echizento said above, it (particularly the horse side) doesn't really look anything like any Byzantine coin I've ever seen either (not that I've seen particularly many).

Now I almost imagine Medieval coming along and declaring what it is immediately.

The reason I was thinking 'Byzantine' was along the lines of this AR coin that I thought was 'similar' (in some respects).

I agree - Medieval, "Where are you?"

I would have never gotten this one. Very interesting coin, there can't be many of these floating around. You may want to pick this one up Topcat.

Got it for $A61

Johnee82 - You were 'Spot on'. Roger 1 a Norman in Calabria - Thanks

V.C - Thanks for the inf. too. That's what made me want to go after it. Late Byzantine - Macedonian Dynasty and the split between orthodox Christianity and Catholicism pre-Henry VIII.

To everyone else, Thanks.

Looks like those Normans in Calabria got up to some mischief.......

Not a collector of those coins myself but it doesn't stop me liking it.....and the price seems right.

Congratulations TC. That seems well worth the the price. A very interesting coin to have. Had it been this side of the planet I would definitely have given it a go myself (if you hadn't already declared an interest that is).
