Yep--it doesn't matter this is a centuries old trick, people still fall for it.

The jar o' fun went for 10k.

Like I said earlier, if this is not a shill bid, I fear for humanity.

Nothing we haven't been watching for years. There's probably 100 threads of this type in the archives.

Certainly true, SsuperDave. To seasoned collectors, threads like this are, generally speaking, nothing new. Yet, there's a constant flow of new collectors who need to be made aware of this gimmickry and fraud at large. Continued postings like this one on the CCF likely help raise their awareness, methinks. Then too, this posting tends to stretch the normal bounds, doesn't it?

It also entertains us how high these prices can get.

Yes, it is entertaining to watch the price rise. It also helps me feel better when I think I might have paid a couple of dollars to much for a $20 coin.

I'm with ExoGuy, new collectors and new people to this board will benefit from bringing these hoaxes up, not very many will go through the archives to find this kind of stuff.

I had to laugh when I saw the Wheat penny with the vdb showing stuck to the side of the jar. Got to give him credit, he must have spent hours getting the most expensive coins to stand upright like that.

Why weren't the coins taken out of the jar and laid out, so that the whole collection could be pictured?

Is the jar valuable?

Laying out the coins, revealing both sides, would defeat the seller's strategy. More than coins, the seller is peddling a story and a dream. He's playing to the wish of most collectors who long to find a rarity and have a great story to then tell about their find. The whole sale, akin to that of the seemingly endless parade of "unsearched rolls" of cents with silver and gold coins on the open ends of these allegedly bank-wrapped rolls, is a big tease.

The jars are worth a few bucks each to those who put up preserves.

Don't get me wrong - these threads are a good thing. The more we talk about it, the better. Newer members get to see what's happening, and Google boosts search results on the topic in our direction.

Post them all.

The likely feeling when someone wins an auction like this...
That feeling after you receive your prize, and you start setting a value to each coin. -->-->
Later, reality sets in.. Then you either or quietly swallow that bitter pill--and never admit being taken.

Listings like that which actually get serious bids are a shame and a sham to the hobby.
