Can't go wrong when collecting coins at face value. Look at it this way....you won't loose money and can always get out of it what you paid for it. Only problem for me when doing that is if I get to many of the same coin I feel as if they aren't as valuable.

Are they rare ? No, not by any means, are they hard to find in circulation ? For some reason , the kids and I started a nickel collection out of circulation, we have filled our 1997-2014 P&D album , have all but ten in our 1962-1996 album, even have all the silver war year nickels, all out of circulation. But in two and a half years of rolling on the average of six rolls of pockety change nickels per month, we have yet to find even one 2009 nickel. Two Buffalo nickels, but not one 2009.

I keep all of those I find in boxes (avg. 1 per box) but therefore will not pay a premium for one.

The satin finish unc mint set nickels look almost identical to circulation strikes. I bought a mint set for that year and used the nickels in the Whitman. I spend any 2009 circulation nickels I get. Circulation dimes, however, do look different so I saved a nice 2009-P circulation one and the one 2009-D ciruculation dime I have rec'd so far. Those are in the Whitman and would spend any others I get so kids can fill their Whitmans too.

In my roll searching, I have yet to see a 2009 turn up. I go through only about 10 rolls every 30 days here in the pacific Northwest. Someone is hoarding them, obviously. I do when I can.

It's those scarce, rare 1964 Nickels I can't find.

just carl was joking, the 64 nickels are so common many believe they must be still minting them to this day.

I never can seem to find any 1982 cents, 1964 nickels, 1965 dimes quarters, or any 1971 halfs!
What the heck!

I have no trouble finding 2009D nickels here in Texas when roll searching. 2009P nickels on the other hand... I don't see those very often at all.

I was given a 2009-P nickel in change at the duty free shop at Barbados cruise terminal last year! Never had one in the States. However I'm sure I read somewhere that a quantity was released for circulation in Puerto Rico, so perhaps they are commoner in the Caribbean...
