Because the one dollar coin is a loonie for the bird . It's not a onie.

I remember thinking that loonie was a stupid name when they came out.
Or should I say stoopid?
And even worse was the toonie and I remember it being spelled that way all along, until I saw otherwise on this forum.

I am sure though, that with the 'Loonie', there was some tongue-in-cheek linkage to Brian Mulroney, our prime minister at the time.

There is some interesting exonumia out there, based upon this premise.

I like "twoonie" myself. Now for the harder question: what to call the future $5 circulation coin?

Fivoon?

Time to drop the -ie. I never liked the name loonie much, it sounds too much like "looney" (lunatic).

Well, I see a number of people agree with the logic of using twonie with the exception of the Mint. SluExe97 said it best! They don't know how to spell. I learned the difference between two and too when I was in grade two. They must have skipped that grade. Thanks for everyone's input. I was trying to decide whether or not I should change the spelling on all the 2 X 2's but even though I made up all the TOONIE tags last night, I'm still not sure I want to be bothered. I guess if twonie is acceptable I'll leave them that way!

Ooooo to build to that, how about "Cinqoon" -- also accommodates francophone interests. Otherwise, we'd have to see what design goes on the reverse to add more relevant commentary

Sounds good skip! Might be a bit hard to pronounce the "cinq" part though for non-speakers of French.

for the five how bout finney? a five was called a finn at one time which I've heard once in a while. but I think when it comes time to ditch the five dollar bill,(either that or the nickle), canada will put in place the technology they are already talking about which is to use cell phones for "micro" transactions. I imagine they ll just throw the 5 in there too since it already doesn't have much buying power. seems to me that it would be a pain though if youre using cash, to also have to pull out your phone for amounts owing or change that is under $5.

I always thought "toonie" was stupid, and when I needed to spell it I spelled it "twoonie". Back when the options were presented for what to call the new $2 coin, "doubloon" was the one I thought was clever.

I remember calling a five a fin. We would flip for fins, where the guys would throw their fives in the pot and flip coins for a winner.

So a 25¢ piece is two bits.
$5 would be 40 bits

Using a Newfoundland accent, the $5 coin can be a....

Farty

So instead of asking someone to "slip me a fin", we could say "flip me a farty b'y"
