S mint coins tend to covet a higher interest and value normally because of lower mintages. Modern circulation strikes may not garner higher premiums just yet but will so in the future. For this reason I keep the higher grade specimens I come across (I also keep high grade Ps and Ds). On average only 1/400 cents are S mint (East Coast). I get way more Canadian cents here than S mints. But as noted, the folks in California and places west expect around 7 S mint cents per roll. Being common may be a more relative term given location.

Spending them or saving them mostly depends on if you need the money or not. Think of this. In about 100 or 200 years, that coin could be worth ten times it's face value.

We keep all the S mint marks we find, but living in Canada we don't really find that many.

But.. we went through some change that a local organization wanted rolled and we found 11 'S' mint mark U.S. cents...

As noted in every "kill the penny" thread on this forum, once cent is an inconsequential amount of money. Realistically, it doesn't matter if you keep them, spend them, or throw them in the trash in terms of how much money you would be tying up or saving.

Personally, I keep all the S mint cents I find--I have maybe 50 in total from years of roll hunting and change-checking (east coast). I doubt they will ever be worth anything in circulated condition, though.

I was super surprised to find a s Lincoln Cent in the 1973 mint set I got today. I wasn't aware they made them that late or even ever included them in the mint sets. I had to take a double date when I got it home and notice Denver had two pennies.

I only got it for the Ike dollars so I only closely looked them over. I also have cents, nickels and dime albums from that period so it was a added bonus. The set was only $10 when he wanted $7 for just one of the Ike's in a 2x2.

I keep all pennies whether they are S D or plain. Due to the fact we will probably quite making them soon. They will increase in demand for at least coin folder fillings.

Gary - I think I have a few open spots for the D mint specimens (<5) but I don't CRH quarters. So far, the State Quarter folders are filled with coins from my change. I suspect that if I did buy some rolls, I'd close out the set, but I'm in no real hurry.

I agree with many others, I keep all S coins I find because they seem special to me. Living on the east coast all my life, S coins were not plentiful, even rare. Whenever I get one, I feel like it's my lucky day. Who cares if they're valuable or not--they are different.

I keep all S-mint coins I find. They are not easy to find in the southeast, so it's kind of special when you find one. Yes, I know they presently do not bring a premium in circulated condition but they might in the future, due to lower mintages than Denver or Philadelphia in many years.

Mani, I say keep them. You'll never be able to pick up those S mint cents for less cost than you just have now.

Mani, that 51-S is a beaut! No, it's neither a key nor valuable, but it sure is nice to look at--which is the best reason of all to keep it.
