Did New Orleans ever strike a quality anything?  |

New Orleans struck some good ones. 1885-O is one of the more common Morgans in higher grades and PL/DMPL. I just think they made a habit of trying to extend die life the best they could.

Yep, you have every reason to be excited about this one. She is a beauty. The early S Mint Morgans just can't be beat. Was this an ebay purchase? I also think it looks PL. Please take photos and post here when you get it. One of my goals is to obtain either a MS66 or 67 DMPL 1881-S Morgan to be the centerpiece of my collection. |

1878-S Morgans often has a proof-like look to them. If I read the history right, the San Fran mint was unhappy with the surface of the dies received from Philly and basined them extensively, thus the proof-like appearance. Carson City did the same as well. Note: Q David Bowers says in his Morgan dollar book that according to records, out of the 10 initial die pairs shipped to SF, they deemed 3 obverse and 8 reverses unfit for use. I am not able to put this coin under extreme scrutiny enough to say 'MS65', but since it is already graded and slabbed that way, I will naturally with it.
It certainly is an eye catcher!

Those would have been the Long Nock B1 reverses, part of the fire-drill scramble it took to get started. The Mint went through the A1 8tf, B1 Long Nock, B2 Short Nock and C reverse convex-breast designs in something like 3 weeks, striking coins the whole time because of pressure to produce. It's a wonder they got as much done as they did.  |
