You can report it. Maybe ebay will do something, maybe they won't.

I call myself a copper collector but I only own a few Half Cents and have never really studied them. Great coin if it's real.

Good detective work TypeCoin! I wonder where all of the other key dates that this seller has listed come from? AliExpress?

When looking at the NGC and the ebay photo the nose definitely was the most obvious difference to me.

Thanks to all - especially SsDd and TC9. Some day I will maybe have your knowledge. Am steering clearof this coin and hope ebay is more aggrerssive at keeping fakes off of their site.

I have to thank all of you guys. What we're doing with threads like this is creating the most powerful tool available against those who darken our hobby: archived, searchable information. Between the level of publicity CCF can reach on its' own - look at the number of reads this thread has compared to posts, and those people are spreading the information elsewhere - Google ensures these conversations will be easily found for anyone with enough interest to enter a relevant search term.
Every thread like this is another block in the foundation. Keep building.

It has to reported to ebay as an alert. They are not proactive on keeping fakes off. The seller needs to be notified. I don't have a problem with copper not being slabbed. Early American Copper specialists hate the tomb. I love it when they show their crack outs.

Does anyone have an opinion on the other key/semi-key date coins this seller currently has posted. They all look like they have the exact same artificial recoloring to the copper cents. I am getting the hunch that this guy's "I am liquidating my collection" story is a farce to try and legitimize the fact of why he has so many rarities for sale all at once and that in actuality they are all fakes.

Quote:but am wondering why the seller hasn't had it TPG'd since it is a key and is in at least XF condition (?) Probably because it is a counterfeit, and it is not the aliexpress counterfeits that has been posted. At least the Aliexpress fakes has a more closely correct reverse for that year, the ebay coin is way off. Both the C-1 and C-2 1811 Half Cents used the same rev die. The Aliexpress fakes use two different reverse dies. The first one is closer to being correct than the second. But on the ebay coin note the point of the leaf below the second S in STATES. It is below the center of the S It should be far past right as on the Aliexpress fakes.

UPDATE - I sent a note to the seller ( nicely written ).... I see that he has removed it from ebay. I also got an email from him. He was a little 'side-steppy' in his explanation but did say that he would submit it to one of the TPG's for authentication. I told him that I sure would be interested in getting a follow-up email with the results if he would be so kind as to do so. I will post it if I ever get an answer - Thanks again to you all for your great input.

That's another key to the process, John. The seller has to see the bullet coming. We have to let them know, whether we think they're doing this deliberately or not. I phrase my messages to these people (I contact every seller you guys post like this) to politely let them know that, having read my information, they are now knowingly selling fakes. That's a Federal crime in the US. It rarely works but that's not the point. The point is establishing evidence for that one case we can finally get prosecuted, whenever it comes. And report it to ebay, as well. With the recent strengthening of the Hobby Protection Act, ebay becomes legally complicit if they fail to act on a warning. Eventually one will stick, and we only need one.
