I see it as a high VF. Although considering the Mint, low XF is possible.

I have it at VF, meaning from Dahlonega it's XF factoring strike weakness and enthusiasm for the issue. You kinda have to grade these to the price people will pay for them.

Quote: You kinda have to grade these to the price people will pay for them. Exactly. These are graded by price and not by wear. Just kidding but yeah, a VF35 by wear that trades at AU money is going to grade 45 or better. It's kind of crazy.

I'd guess VF35 from first glance

I'm torn between EF40/45 and AU50, technically I think it's a VF35 but Dahlonega gold is weakly struck and graded on a generous curve by most TPGs.
Gotta come up with a grade - so I'm going EF45

Oops, sorry. I was out over the weekend and forgot to post the grade Friday. Anyway, this coin was graded XF-40. I thought it might make XF-45 based on PCGS photograde. The coin in general and denticles in particular are really poorly struck. All that being said, this was actually a jewelry piece that I found among my grandmothers things. Fortunately, it was in a bezel that just clamped around the coin and was easily removed. There are two small obverse rim nicks at 11:30 and 1:00. I am unsure if these are from the bezel or not. I actually found this coin over a year ago when going through things, but never looked at it closely because it was in jewelry. In the fall, I was sitting in Kazakhstan talking to a fellow collector specializing in U.S. gold and it dawned on me that the D was Dahlonega and not Denver. Anyway, I decided to submit it to PCGS and see how it would grade. The photo below is the slab as well as the bezel and small box that the coin was in. I do not think that the bezel ever had a chain on it.
