I collect Morgan dollars by variety. If I can't make out the details needed to attribute one, let alone tell if the surfaces are original, I just pass right on by. If I see enough "crap coins" by a single seller, Ï'll add them to my excluded list on my saved search. (the list is many btw) |

A few years ago I bought a GSA Morgan from a local auction based on pics a little bit better than the first one. Once I got it and seen it I was more than disappointed. It had a severe rim ding and scratches everywhere. I graded it around MS-60/61. I wound up trading it in on an upgrade at my local dealer.  |

Excellent tip & example on what to look for when bidding through an online vendor denco7. These 2 images are "Night & Day". A novice bidder may very well save a ton of cash & a stint of buyer's remorse should they view this thread prior to heading into a virtual auction house. Well done  |

Someone broke out the brillo pad...
I do almost all of my buying online, except the 1 weekend of the
year when the coin show is in town.... so I am very cautious.
I don't buy without big/clear pictures. I look very hard at feedback.
I don't bid if a false reserve is set by starting the bid high.
I don't buy from coin people that resell coins in basement slabs,
and obviously should know better. I don't buy from anyone that claims
any of their offerings are "unsearched". I don't buy from people that
use "stock photos" or don't have a photo of the EXACT coin I am buying.
A sure tip off that is happening is if the auction has more than 1 of
the item available. The coin in the pic is gorgeous, but they are selling
out of a roll, for example, I just assume the coin I will get is nothing
like the one in the picture. Sometimes, if I am interested enough, I will
contact the seller and ask for a pic of the exact coin I am getting. A
good seller will do that for you, and is worth buying from again.
I don't buy if the shipping charge is high, and as a matter of choice, I
usually do my searches for "free shipping". I avoid anyone that uses the
word "rare" (or similar) in auctions I look at. If the item was actually
rare, I sure couldn't afford to look at the auction. It's insulting.
I am probably forgetting a few others. I have been buying this way so long,
it's pretty much auto-pilot for me now. I just try not to get complacent.

Something I like to do on ebay is look at how many deals a seller has. Certainly it is not foolproof, but if you see a seller with 10,000 transactions you can be assured that is a big dealer and will try to suck every cent out of a sale. Nothing wrong with that, the dealer must do exactly that, but I like to look for undergrades that perhaps need to be cracked, or are PQ for the grade. You are not going to find that (of course there are exceptions) from a professional seller. On the other hand, a seller with a couple hundred sales is likely to be a private collector selling to make room for upgrades. And I simply feel better dealing with a collector. Sometimes even strike up a conversation and acquire a good friend. |

Very cleaned. If the seller is on ebay you can see his "Feedback" and most likely it is not 100%. Any Seller that is not 100% always gets a closer scrutiny from me before I hit the bid/buy button. Reading the feedback, and reading between the lines of the feedback, can be very enlightening sometimes. |
