The bubbling of the metal can be done with excessive heat.
The straight line cuts were done with some time of sharp tool.

collect error coins always have. this one I find it happened before it left the mint esp where the hair of the cape of the caribou imprinted right onto the bubbles...
also the cuts all have coin material bridging them. I believe it came from the starting of the roll before it even went to the pressing machine because the ruts are in different angles on both sides.

The close-up of the caribou's hair is PMD evidence. If this "came from the starting of the roll", in your own words, then this would not be the only one with a sliced-up planchet. There would be more known. Quality control at the Mint shouldn't even be so bad to let a defective metal strip through. |

interesting coin Gunnern, I'm curious to see what other thoughts are on this one. The bubbled area I can't see it as being excessive heat produced that area is not damaged enough in melt formations for that. My initial thought was a plasma cutter on the lines, but not too sure if that's possible either. hmmmmmmmmmmm

Gunnern79- looks like it not the beginning or end of the roll "nickelsguy" is one of the experts here who would be familiar with such an error.
Show us some of your other error coins you must have something there.

Hey Gunnern79... I have a few coins like this quarter of yours. It is definitely environmental damage BUT I also think we are seeing impurities in the metal which have been rolled out in one direction hence the linear effect. robmck, your nickel is different because it is "eaten away" (corroded) in a linear effect.
gunnern's quarter was sliced with a tool.

From how the metal looks like as of now. Look at the 6th picture, leftmost gouge. The metal looks "pressed down", this is by a tool slicing it. Your nickel looks pitted around the holes because it is by corrosion, while this one is relatively even (although I see a hint of pitting/corrosion around the cut at "ABET"). If the holes were caused by corrosion, it would be more unevenly shaped and pitted around the hole's edges.
