Great find!! If it's problem free, it's worth between $200-$300.

Sure SantaFe.. Give me a day or 2 to take some photos and I'll upload them here. The 1848 American Cent is in poor condition while the 1849 French Franc looks ok (but worse than the above pictured 1849 dime).

Wow nice coin! I just started getting into detecting. I need a better detector though but can't afford it yet. Do you know anything about the goldbug?

Wow, you found the Money Pit. This, like almost every dug coin, won't be hard to identify as such. So, it would get a Details slab, but it's certainly going to retain fair numismatic premium due to its' rarity. The story of the provenance is a selling point in and of itself, as well.

Hi Eagle, I don't know much about the Goldbug. I use the Garrett AT Pro on land and in shallow water and I really like it. I also just purchased the Fisher CZ-21 that I'll start using on salt-water beaches and scuba diving.

I think that a photo of the dig site would add to the provenance value of the coin.

You can learn a lot about metal detecting at various websites, Eagle Eye. I would encourage you to peruse the Friendly Metal Detecting Forum: http://metaldetectingforum.com/There are lots of threads for newbies and veterans alike.

Thanks for the feedback on the Franc, THQ! It was a pretty cool coin to pull out of the ground. Most people figure that you'll probably find only American coins at a '49er site in Panama (or perhaps colombian coins), however, numerous other nationalities (thousands from Europe alone) also journeyed to California to try their luck. PS- The 1848 American cent is in pretty rough shape, no? Metal detectorists would describe it as "toasted". Is it even worth 1 cent, today?
