Great comments on the US Dollar strength.
Last I saw CADUSD was 78 - 79 US cents in exchange for 1 Canadian Dollar. It was roughly 88 cents at the beginning of the year. 94 - 95 cents being the 52 week high. Seems to be near some long term support now. Could get very interesting if it were to fall much further along with oil.
Wish I knew high end coins better honestly as I imagine there will be deals to be had here. Still working my way up as a collector.

Looks like there are quite a few internet bids starting to come in now, especially in the last day or two. Like Macdon ,I too am a lot less enthusiastic than I was. Just do the math on this. Lots of similar gems all coming out at the same time, with very few high end players in the decimal Canadian segment right now. There could be some great LONG TERM bargains for the investor or dealer with VERY deep pockets. That said the Canadian economy is NOT that great right now and a lot of the so called top end Coin Dealers in Canada will not or cannot tie up huge amounts of cash in speculative inventory. Try selling a nice 100K plus numismatic holding to a dealer in Canada right now for instant cash. You will get one of the following answers. I am not interested or I have too much of that stuff , can I pay you over time ?, or if you are really lucky someone will low ball you at one third of trends. Right now CASH is KING and most are going to hold on to it. As to the comment on those of us lucky enough to have the luxury of bidding in US dollars, it is an advantage for sure, but you must consider that most economists and FX traders see the Greenback rising a further 5 to 10 per cent, and quickly against the other currencies which are all (exception Swiss franc and Sterling)in a suicide race to the bottom because of insane Central Bank policies. An almost certain guarantee of a win in the Greenback is going to trump speculating in Large Cents any day. For what it is worth , enjoy the sale either in person or online, bid prudently and tread lightly. Remember a golden rule of numismatics. No matter how nice the coin or coins are ,there are still more of them to buy than anyone has cash. Just like a city bus comes by every ten minutes ,new coins are available every sale.

Would I like to pick up something from this collection.. sure... I live in Winnipeg and this is a fellow Winnipeg collector.. so I personally would like to make sure that at least ONE of the items will come back into the hands of a COLLECTOR...
I KNOW that with the dollar the way it is... and with the way the lots are set up most people that will be buying are dealers or speculating....
My opinion is that there will be some great deals to be had but I don't think this will be the time where I drop my entire annual "hobby" budget at one auction... (though when I did that 3 yrs ago it was super fun!... that day!)
Wish I could be there.. but I will have to settle for placing my internet bids and hoping they hold...

AG I will drink a beer for you after the session. Heck I might even drink two in the session, it will be a long night . Toronto will be fun for a few days, but expensive! Hope you are lucky enough to get a few coins from the sale.

I wonder what the story is on lot #850. Why would you estimate an 1889 10c at $700 in F-15, and provide no picture?

1889 is a key date in that series.. I think trends has F-15 around $2200....
As for why no picture... I can't honestly speak for that... it's certainly a coin that would warrant getting as much attraction as possible in an auction.. but I also will assume that who ever ends up taking that one home will already be at the auction in person and have viewed the coin in hand.
Also in the cataloge the items that follow are some pretty fantastic coins in their own right which will probably fetch more money so perhaps more attention was given to those coins which are in MS-AU condition...

Well I got my bids in, decided it would be better to save the travel time on this one, so I won't make it up to Toronto... Ended up placing bids on around 15 lots that I felt were strong, but I feel like depending on the action at the actual auction, I feel I am just as likely to win all as to be outbid on every single one...
It will be VERY interesting to see the results of this sale, and I think it will be a great litmus test for the state of the Canadian coin market... I have a feeling PCGS population reports will explode especially on the Victorian copper, I do know a couple of American buyers who will be going very heavy on a couple of coins for their registry sets...
Anyways, enjoy the live auction to those attending!

There are a few unattributed varieties being offered.
In the huge selection of 1899's alone I can see one group of gem 99's with a RP 9 in the group of 5 cents..
For anyone going..getting a close look at those lots will offer some "best of" surprises..with those gem cents..
Some very nice bids in there already..

Well a fellow collector and I are going in on this auction together... hopefully pooled resources will help grab a lot or two...
I'm in the party of putting in a bid and just praying it holds... I don't like watching the auctions live.. too much of a tendency to hit "bid again" when I've reached my limit... (yup I'm one of those!) With this auction and all the nice surprises that could really get me in trouble... I'm just glad I go for pretty marginal items but I still see me spending a whole LOT more than I should.. bawahahha just have to cut back on the beer for awhile I say.

Quote: 1889 is a key date in that series.. I think trends has F-15 around $2200.... That's my point, even with the current soft market, key dates are still bringing 50-60+% of Trends, not 30%. I wish I could be there in person to see it, perhaps it has been cleaned or is impaired in some other way.
