Worldwide problem alright and it covers everything you can and cant imagine. Why? Because the world market place has plenty of room for them and its legal to produce them in some countries. China and Turkey are leaders in counterfeiting everything from toothpaste, your drugs, running shoes, computer parts, airplane parts, watches, purses and the list goes on forever and dont forget about counterfeit high end cars. To much money at stake and plenty of bigwigs involved so how do you take it down?
Because there is so much money at stake it will end up like the useless 'war on drugs' money talks.

It is up to CBSA to intercept these items and lay the appropriate charges right at the border. But instead they rather spend tons of time and money, justifying their efforts pursuing a traveler who has an extra ½ liter of scotch

How do they know (cbsa) if they are counterfeit or not ,they are not trained at spotting counterfeit coins.

47P7, the issue would be if you throw the book at someone because he does not check the yes box, but is legitimately unaware he has fakes (received in change or otherwise) now you are punishing the innocent.

I have not been collecting as long as some on here, and when I see people posting pictures and asking if these are real or fake, its hard for me to tell. just imagine someone who does not give a rats behind about coins, if they would be able to tell.

I think a seperate section for 'counterfeits and fakes' would be an asset for us all here. Not only will it help us train our eye and prevent costly mistakes but it would help back up fellows like 'nickelsguy' in his never ending fight against crime.

I brought up the idea of a separate thread for counterfeits and an area where people could post sources (be it ebay or otherwise) of fake coins. It was shot down by the forum admins.

I guess it might be a tough forum I could see a lot of possible problems/arguments/locked threads stemming from it in the beginning. Although I think it would iron itself out eventually. Certainly would be a learning experience for all...lol

ying yang..
A the traveler is being asked on the form if they acquired any. They would know.
B how do you get Canadian currency as change when out of the country? You would have to purposely ask for it. OR go to a place where you know u can get what u are after. (oh yes, I know places in HKG)
C it would be as easy for CBSA to detect a fake as it is to detect .05 grams of cannabis or whatever.
D and they could simply ask!! as a routine question. right? they ask a ton of "unrelated" fishing questions anyway when u are directed to secondary for your declared extra 1/2 liter of scotch.

I did not post my suggestions to look for arguments about details of ifs and whens and buts.
I did post it as a suggestion for us to become instrumental the ONLY way we have to do something about it as a huge numismatic group and not as individuals. I am certain we could get other forums involved also.

ALMOST ALL FAKES COME FROM OTHER COUNTRIES AND THE CUSTOMS FORM WOULD BE A HUGE DETERRENT.
If anyone has a better way to get a solution, please post it!
However, we always have the option to continue complaining to each other... I guess that is easier than to get a bit involved...

Good luck guys. As long as people make money, they'll keep counterfeiting. Hard to teach ethics.

How many fake, and even high quality copied products of all sorts, (of which coins are an almost negligible part by proprotion), are imported into the Country by both legal and illegal means?

**691,
that may be so.
but fact is that customs will and does stop counterfeit shipments of goods. Although not all. They even stop TM infractions.
so why not currency and coins. the law says so.
Australian laws are very similar to ours. I know your customs boys and girls are very concerned with fake stuff coming in from China and other Asian countries.
and I know, AUS also has a declaration card every air traveler coming in must fill out. it becomes a legal document and is enforceable in courts. and as you know, ignorance is not an excuse.
presently there is NO effort whatsoever made by customs in any country I am aware of or have been to (only 64) to even do as little as ask....
but they sure ask if you have enough money to support your stay. It is not a matter of how much time they spend with you. It is a that it is not in their job scope of what to ask and enforce. It is that the respective governments do not care one iota.
and we can only change that by lobbying our elected politicians. I see no other way!

The only counterfeits from Montreal that I know of was that guy
that was making fake 04/05 Toonies and was shut down by the
authorities about 10 years ago. Would be interested in what other
fakes came from there.

If anyone up has pictures and information about the counterfeit varieties that are presently circulating in Canada, I would not be adverse to adding a section on Canadian counterfeits to The Black Cabinet.
