the machines in Canada that flatten 1 cent pieces or 5 cent pieces or 25 cent pieces don't actually flatten a coin they just flatten a blank, that's how they got around the law. In the states though they are everywhere and flatten the actual coin

These are actual nickels. The Casa Loma one is a cupronickel one that you can barely see the remnants of a Pedery-Hunt portrait, year unknown (my mom made this, not me, so I don't know what she used). The Toronto Zoo one is a 2011 nickel, and you can clearly see the outline of "5 cents", the beaver, "CANADA", and the date on the other side. If you look hard enough on the shark side you can see the RCM logo, "REGINA", "ELIZABETH II", and some of the rim beads. The mashed "pennies" I got from Australia and Hong Kong are copper blanks. Interesting that a 2011 5-cent could be deformed like that, while keeping the multi-ply plated surfaces intact...

Unlike this one I tried with a Shield cent, and the next one is a 19X6 Memorial zincoln. I think this was mashed right side first. The plating on the back is intact.  The zinc on this one is starting to react. You can see the grey under the beads at the very bottom. The plating on the back isn't intact, I'll get a scan later.  I can't get better pics that that now but the plating is definitely split open. |

I have one of these from a trip to Disneyland when I was young, can't recall if it was a real coin or where it is.

the ones I had seen at west ed cost you $1.01 with the loonie disappearing and the cent being returned mashed. I suppose they could say the machines are to be used with blanks, but its tough to sell when the machine says right on it to insert $1 and 1c. yes I find the zincolns interesting as the mashing design is copper with zinc trails,(at least the one I have)

Here are all 4 of them.   Upon closer inspection the plating did split slightly. If you look hard you can see the remnants of "ELIZ" on the top beads! I wish I have better picture-taking thing other than my scanner because some of the obverse letters are visible in the field.  You can't really see it so I highlighted it in red. There's a (very) slight split on the back of the dorsal fin, top tail fin, NTO, and the first gill.  The little bit of brown you see on the left reverse is also split plating, I think.  This conversation has gone from drawing on paper money to mashing coins... Should I start a new topic instead? |

I'll start a new thread in the exonumia forum later, because these aren't really money. VICK, I think it's because there is no circulating currency that is of good size to be elongated. The ones I have from the US and Hong Kong are from blanks. Because if they supply blanks it cuts into their profit of having to have blanks and then having to put it in the machine. If not it's just going to say "out of blanks" and then nobody can use the machine. Back on topic... Quote:

It's apparently just being done on the older $5s, not the new plastic bills. At least the ones that are being shown in the media are the older ones.
