I have a hard time telling AU from MS from photos. Maybe it is just me, but I will give you that it is MS. (Edit to say: It is GRADED as MS). Actually, I meant to do that in the first post.

Comparing it my example, which is graded MS62, I'd have to say yours is also an MS62 and possibly even an MS63:

Thank you Barry, Good to compare to an existing 32-D, I believe they are tougher on the keys. Shouldn't be . . . . . .

It's rare for me to say this...but you should make your web pics a little smaller. Large pictures invite over-analysis of every flaw. Yes, they are nice to look at but ultimately the goal is to reproduce what you see in hand. I can see the luster. I usually don't grade anything but Lincolns but I'll take a shot. Looks like rub on the high points. I believe these are known for somewhat mushy strikes but I still think it has a hair of wear too. It could be the infamous "cabinet friction" but it still presents as slight wear. Looking at the fields I suspect the wear will be evident as breaks in the field luster. When your trying to figure out what those breaks look like, pull out a high-grade MS coin of the same type.....hold it under good light and cartwheel it. If the fields are clean, you will see the cartwheel spokes are unbroken in the fields. Take your time and examine it closely, pay nearly full attention to the fields. Then compare your coin using the same conditions. On an AU coin those spokes will have dull spots or places where the luster is more "flashy" than "cartwheely". The fields look a little too beat-up for an MS coin. And most people don't use this...but the rims have evidence of wear. They aren't mint smooth. The highest points on coins are the rims. They are the first thing to wear but most everyone ignores them. For me, in a tight decision making process, it's my last resort "go to". I've passed on buying a lot of coins because I didn't like the rims. AU-55 but one never knows with the TPGs. I like putting coins like this in their hands so I stop thinking about them. LOL

Thad, I have the same concerns as you. There are a couple feathers that look like they have rub. The high spots on the portrait forward and rearward ear curls look like they have rub. The hairline is nice. This can be seen in the photos. When I hold the coin in hand with 10-X I can't make out any rub. So, what is more accurate, the photos or my (old) eyes. It could go either way. Oh, and the cartwheel in the fields is smooth all the way around. I had never used cartwheel in the fields to look for luster breaks or wear. Thank you for that tip! It is in a top tier TPG holder, as MS. So my eyes and the TPG call it MS. The photos . . . . not so much. The motto is strong. That is an indicator of a strong strike in '32 I believe. I have some new Jansjos and am getting better with them. I have them diffused and at 10 and 2. I believe my focus is just a hair off on these. I might need to reshoot . . . . and make them sharper. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Very informative post. Goes to show you what some people look for that others may overlook. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
Nice Quarter overall. Thanks for sharing.

Drumroll . . . . . MS61 in a six digit small ANACS holder. I truly believe it will today score a 62. I am going to send it to PCGS for crossover. Depending on how that goes, I might consider sending it back for conservation to see if they can make that spot disappear or diminish. What do you guys think that spot is about? Thanks for playing, and I promise to post the results. Last time I sent in pieces for crossover, I struck out. I was expecting a couple upgrades on four coins and got zip, nada, not a one. But I ain't breaking it out. If it came back AU, I would jump off a bridge!

Wow Jon I was going to say MS62-63 no problem. I have a MS66 coin that has a nick on the obverse. Its always interesting with graders.

Did not cross! Arrrgghhh! They gotta be seeing rub right? I asked to cross at grade. Thought it was a cinch. Soooo . . . Resubmit and ask for minimum 60? That would tell the tale, I shoulda done that to start, it just never occured to me. Crack it? Nooooo! Sell it? Keep it and love it? Problem is I am trying to build liquidity for my heirs. I have a couple days before it gets back . . . and a couple more days that the crossover special is in effect. Guess I will figure something out. . . .

I don't think you're loved ones would have any issues liquifying that guy in an MS ANACS holder. Don't stress. Keep it, Love it.

You're "trying to build liquidity for my heirs", so just leave it alone. It could be you dodged a bullet with that MS61. The coin won't ever get better by itself - it is what it is. That's something I have to keep telling myself over and over, so you're not alone. It seems to me you're gnashing your teeth over $100 in possible MS62 value and shooting for another $500 for MS63 when the next TPG opinion could cost you $400 instead. It's preserved, somebody thought it was mint state, and your heirs will either treasure it or sell it for whatever they can get. You've done your job.

This collection will be sold before I am cold. The wife disapproves to the point that I have "gone underground" with the building of the set. The only thing she sees is grading fees, as I can't seem to get that over to the (top secret!)paypal account. So every time I send stuff to the graders it comes back on the credit card and I have to hear about it. Maybe I can get a clandestine credit card . . . . that is a lot of trouble though. Somehow, the cloak and dagger stuff makes it more fun!! But back to the coin. kbbpll, the upgrade that I believe it deserves to "62" is not about money. $80.00 (Numismedia upgrade to MS62)is not going to kill me. It's the principle. I would like it in an MS62 PCGS holder. I believe that is where it belongs. But I am not going to crack it, as perhaps that is indeed rub, perhaps it is indeed AU. $80 is not going to kill me but $616 (downgrade to AU) would sure get my attention. Anyhoo, I don't want to collect plastic, but it is a big part of the "game" now. And a 1932-D in PCGS MS62 plastic would be easier to sell, and for more money that a MS61 in ANACS plastic. And would go into a registry. And I don't like it, but I didn't make the rules. So I can narrow my choices to three. A; Keep it and love it. B; Resubmit with a minimum grade of MS60 and give the graders some more money. Maybe they would bite, probably not. C. Sell it and look for something better. Leaning toward "A". But have not got "B" out of my mind just yet. And "C" is off the table at least for a while. And you know what? I am worrying about this ENTIRELY too much. I have two kids that I should go and I am worried about ANACS vs PCGS. I gotta take a break. Go kayaking in my '32-S. Really, I scraped up enough dinero to buy a nice 32-S about a year ago and instead blew it on two kayaks! Supposed to take them out Tuesday and see some Alligators and Bald Eagles. Last time we saw some Barred Owls. It is full on Spring in Louisiana!
