Susan?

If you want, I can send you a few little motivation sets from this side, I used to give those away on coinmarkets here when I had a table, they content a 1, 5,10 and 25 cent piece from Wilhelmina 1948, the only four types minted after wwII from that queen in the Netherlands.

I can make you abouth 50 sets if you want those?

Greetings, Carl

Carl, that's very generous! I want to wait to get anything together until MorganFred is back with us. He is our Scout liaison and I want to get his opinion before getting anything together.

We also have the option of offering contests here for kids (any collectors under age 18). Your sets would be great for these also. I anticipate having more younger numismatists here with this school year (hopefully).

Rest in Peace

Hi Carltromp, we have been struggling with this for many months. If you look back to some older threads you can see some of what we have done. Many folks do stuff locally, lot's of us supported COINFEST this summer that ND put together and it is aimed squarely at young folks. Some are doing things with schools, giving talks and giving coins away to young folks. I have sponsored two or three "contests" with some success on the forum

I am thrilled that you have resurrected this subject at Summers close. Many great ideas have been suggested and I look forward to contributing however I can. We have some young folks on the forum and we should work at keeping them interested. They can have a big impact on their peers as well. Come on Forum members, let's get the fires going! Mike

That is an easy thing to do, Every youngster under 18 on this forum can send me his adress (by mail), I will send him/her a serie of Juliana 1980, that's the last year we used the 1 cent piece here, after that we rounded every thing of to 5 cents.

Every kid over 18 who want's it has to send a serie from his own country in return

IF ND want's, and he can use them for his next coinfest, I'm willing to support it with a few original mint sets as well, I have several double sets from the Netherlands, Netherlands antillies, and Aruba.
He just have to give me a note.

Greetings, Carl.

After giving some thought, I believe they will seek it out on their own, In good time. When we were all younger, we all had different taste, and with all the opportunity for other interest, somehow we ended up collecting one way or another. I believe this is the way it has laway's been. They will get older and life will leave them with a hunger to have a hobby. Coin collecting is the most popular, so it will have to cross their mind.

The one thing going on right now that wasn't just a few years ago that will spark some collector interest is the new designs for the quarters and nickels. I mean, we went for years with the same old tired designs so who was inspired to collect anything from circulation? It almost seems to me that for kids, it has to start with pulling things out of circulation. We can now look forward to the next State Quarter, and the next new nickel. This might help to lay the foundation for more advanced collecting in the future.

Yep Carl, that's a good question....as soon as I wrote that statement, I realized oh boy, here I am thinking just about us here in the U.S. again. I do need to learn to look beyond the end of the nose on my face someday! Shame on me! (especially since my ancestry is The Netherlands!)

I would like to suggest that perhaps we are asking the wrong question. Look at the eras where coin collecting had the fastest amount of growth--in America: the 1850's or the lead up to the Civil War, the 1930's or the Great Depression, the so called "Nifty-Fifties" or atomic bombs and the not so nifty start of Mutually Assured Destruction, the mid 60's which had a host of issues along with in your face protesters.

IMO, to collect coins you have to be inclined towards introversion. There are alot of reason why people will accept introversion and even seek it but one of the major reasons, IMO, is because they see the external world going to hell in a hand basket and withdraw from it.

The conditions in the world today are such that there is going to be a steady stream of people withdrawing from it possibly for at least the next ten years. This is a major growth potential for coin collecting if we can *keep them.* ---it's already built, they will come. But will they stay?

We should tell new coin collectors from the get-go "that all is not what it seems" (Al Pacino--The Recruit). That market grading is not precise. That the standards can and have changed. And if they don't find that terribly appealing then there are ways to marginalize market grading and TPG's--such as with darkside coins. We should tell them that coinstreet is not wallstreet. Coins are more likely to do nothing for years and perhaps even decades and then *maybe* take a big jump. And then not do again for awhile.

They should be told that coin collecting can be whatever they want it be and not necessarily what "market makers" want it to be. People who have had a belly full of the external world don't need to hear more rules like: "only buy the highest grade coin that you can afford. Only buy it from this TPG because they suck the least. The next generation will be looking for purpose and direction. They won't be looking to pull the market grading rikshaw behind their backs. They should be told that they can collect whatever they want in whatever grade they want.

Mike is correct. My time is at a very big premium now, as the major season for us gets started, but I am working on next years CoinFest dates and activities. I will post all the final details by years end.

We are in constant need, so any donation or contribution of any kind is much appreciated.

I have been a bit busy lately, so I have not updated the website or next years schedule, but hopefully both will be done over the next few months. I have been working with the chambers of commerce in each of next years cities, and have been trying to put the final details together with area businesses.
While the first event was hampered by the weather, it was still a success in many ways. The exposure has been tremendous. I am still making news here in Delaware. Almost feel as if I am the belle of the ball. Many of the local and national businesses that missed the opportunity to be a part of the first event are clammering to be a part of the future events.
I will try to keep everyone here updated as my schedule allows.
