Try putting some of the State Quarters in dish soap, heating it but not boiling or it will bubble out. Let dry as is. Should turn bluish pending the brand of dish soap. Different brands create different effects. |

Cannot really tell without a picture but more than likely, if an ebay seller has a bunch of similarly toned coins, they are playing the part of back room chemist  Especially if these are modern clad quarters and not old silver quarters that have been stored in an album for forty years... That's very intense coloration. I'm no expert by any means but I think it was likely done intentionally.

that coin is AT and is worth exactly one quarter. it takes years for a coin to get light colors. if it was me I would send it back for a refund you have been taken for a ride. a long ride on a short bridge

The toning on that coin is 100% fake. Stay away from buyers like that and who sell a lot of toned coins like that. I agree with garylcsr and you should ask for a refund right away.

Sorry johnb1, that pups a poster child for shake'n'bake. Here's a neat set of pictures some might find interesting that show the progression of colors of an AT coin as it was being toned. The pictures are of the same coin taken every 10 seconds or so as it was being thermally oxidized. Notice no true greens or reds were produced. Definitely fake but at the same time I kinda like it. I hope you didn't pay too much for it and if it were me, I would keep it. Also, thanks for the toning progression series of photos. While I don't like AT, it is pretty cool to see the progression.

Thanks Just Carl Also, some gun bluing solutions will turn quarters a little brownish. Heating a Copper coin on a stove will get some blue colors. Heating coins in water on a stove and adding all kinds of things from around the kitchen will also form odd colors. Things like ketchup, garlic, onions, eggs, salad dressing, etc. Vinegar will make a copper coin start to turn greenish. You could make an entire collection of weird colored coins. Of course remember as coins they are worthless to a collector except on ebay. |
