Where To Find Mintages Of Old (1858-1967) Specimen Sets?

Skip, if you have access to a copy of "A Guide Book of Canadian Coins and Tokens 1st Edition" by James A. Haxby (a forum member) , there is an interesting read on Specimen coinage of 1858 to 1967, pp 384,385,386 . There are some mintage figures , but they are by no means complete. IE 1902 shows 100 sets. Also the ICCS 2014 POP report offers insight to remaining certified numbers. Have a blast get back to us with some interesting tidbits!
Also the post war years 1945-1949 offer lots of Specimens to drool over and the mintages are low. Can you say made to order ? Sure you can!
There were some nice examples for sale in the recently completed Victoria North Sale. A previous post refers to a 1950 25 cents that was to die for!

The afore mentioned book states 1946 having a mintage of 15 sets but that has to be erroneous when comparing the ICCS reports for survivors. For instance total grades are as follows
cent 31 , 5 cents 28 . 10 cents 71 , 25 cents 12 , 50 cents 13 , Dollar 28. Also these do not include any NGC or PCGS numbers. I have a 1946 cent in SP60 and a SP65 25 cents that are both in US TPG.

Skip...Here is some info on your question that I have. As Pacific mentioned the official issue of the early sets is unknown. There are a number of sets of other years other than the ones I have listed that were given out to certain dignitaries.
The list of special presentation sets that were issued with a case that usually had the date inscribed in the case are:
1858...1,5,10,20 Cents
1870...1,5,10,25,50 Cents
1902...1,5,10.25,50 Cents
1908...1,5,10,25,50 Cents ( the set was issued on the opening of the Canada Mint).
1911...1,5,10,25,50 Cents
1937...1,5,10,25,50,1.00 ( Was issued in a presentation set and also in a cardboard set).

One presentation set of 1921 is known to exist.
Approx. 1000 sets of 1908, 1911, and 1937 were issued.

Specimen coins known to exist prior to 1937:
Cents...1859 over 8 (wide 9), 1859,1876,1882,1890,1891LD,1893,1899,1908,1911,1925,1937.
5 Cents...1858 SD & LD, 1870 Flat edge, 1870 Raised edge,1871,1872,1880,1883,1886,1887,1889,1892,1893,1899,1908,1937.
10 Cents...1858,1870,1908,1911.
25 Cents...1858,1870,1874,1894,1901,1908,1937.
50 Cents...1872,1908,1911,1937.
1 Dollar...1935,1937.

As you can see not all denominations were issued in each year. Hope this helps explain this mystery of early specimen issues for you and hopefully others can contribute info that they have.

There is a specimen dollar also out there for 1936... it cannot be confirmed that it was struck in 1936 (it used to belong to Pittman, if you can see where I am going with this...)

Roger ......................put the brakes on ! !! Mentioning Specimen 1936 dollars could lead to conspiracy and otherwise dotty theories. There are 5 1936 SP dollars in ICCS holders with the highest an SP67.
Skip there is a rumour of an Edward VIII silver dollar pattern, never confirmed. It is referred to in Starr Gilmores book on Canadian Silver Dollars. I got sick of waiting for one so I just got one in Bronze from INA retro , pretty cool piece. They are listed in KRAUSE odd and unusual coins.

I can add a few to Wiremans list as well...1931 specimen coins for sure exist as well as 1932 fifty cents.
