Forgot to mention the coin came with an old style ANACS photo certificate and graded VG, Corroded.

Bowers net graded it down to G4, which seems still a bit optimistic (I tend to be grade my own coins very strictly).

Whatever the case, the coin is still representative and not the worst example of a corroded chain cent I have seen.

I think it would grade the same today. I think even if you purchased a nicer example you would have to keep that one. All your coins are great and make me wish I had the foresight to invest this way. I think I've posted before that in 1980 I worked in a coin shop and was taking home $1,500 a week for over a year paying $25.00 for rent at home. I should have been putting coins like yours away. Never the less I really enjoy your posts and my 13 year old niece also thinks their really neat.

I love worn Chain Cents. The aura of history surrounding them is palpable. These are the coins the Founders carried in their pockets. If I bought one of these in a slab it would be free within minutes of arrival, so I could hold that history in my hand. There is no feeling like it; I get the same thing from my 5 Kopeck coppers.

These are always amazing and the reverse is great. That said, obverse has issues. I can't really go higher than AG.
