"Among the tip-offs for investigators was the number of half dollars coming in from China for redemption outpaced the total the U.S. Mint has made, they say."

Priceless.

You think half dollars being a even meager portion of the coins would be being a tip off. It's funny that the average per car was $900. That would make me want to go to a junkyard for coins not a bank.

They've known about it since 2009, yet no one has been arrested? Talk about the wheels of justice being slow!

It's Nixon's fault, he's the one who acknowledged that mainland China existed.

What I'm about to say is in no way condoning racism, but aren't Chinese well known for counterfeits? Is it safe to say that it's cultural?

It's not racists.

I recall watching a television program with a Chinese businessman in China. His company only made counterfeit items. In the interview he admitted that they take great pride in producing counterfeit items. Also stating that they take great strides to make these items as close to the real thing as possible.

Welcome to my home state. :-)

Why do you think it's so easy to be a counterfeit collector here? :-)

They need to start prosecuting those in the US that knowingly try to defraud the government. Until someone is made an example, counterfeiters in the US will continue making MILLIONS.

It's things like this that make me steer far clear of anything to do with China. You never know if it's real.

What's worse is they knew, but kept on buying the fakes! By my calculations, which are rough, they have so far paid the counterfeiters around 1.4 BILLION dollars of our tax money. (But now they are going to try and not pay them the last 5.4 million.)

That assumes they were correct when they said they have redeemed more half dollars than we ever made, and they are only counting the coppernickel clad halves made for circulation. None of the silver, collector, or proof issues. If they are counting those mintages two then that 1.4 billion dollar figure is low.

That's pretty close to a cubic foot of coins. And how did they get damaged, by crushing the cars? They'd be lost forever at that point.
