The coin is odd looking at first glace, I can't say for sure anything about the coin using those photos, the frosty contrast on the hair is a point in favor of originality though...

Cleaned. The luster is too high. The original coin was probably in EF or AU. Otherwise, an MS 60 coin wouldn't usually have scratches so deep and abundant.

I don't think dipped, and if polished they did a pretty good job of getting into every single nook and cranny. however from this particular seller it throws up the caution flags.

Recently dipped, Not a harsh cleaning as there are no hairlines present. If polished you would see some hairlines. Actually it's not a bad example of a 48 dollar except the cleaning took away any originally of the coin. Selling coins is much like fishing, the brighter/flasher lure you use, the bigger the fish you catch.

I think that it looks fine,..but what do I know...
Most dollars in those years were quickly dipped once..
..and the set (45,..46,..47's) that I have look much like that 48 and came directly from the original owner who never touched them.
Some of my 40's have a bit more frosting on the jaw(die burn),..but these dies were now chrome plated and had a much better finish than the previous years..
The present price is very low ..IMO..

Cleaned, polished or dipped, I bet it goes for at least $1500.00.

It will probably sell for around $2000 being an asyn coin. Its a shame that most of these things are cleaned, I might never find one for that reason. There were 18,000 minted but FAR less are actually out there which is kind of sad. If I cant find an uncleaned MS-63 one of these things in the next couple of years I'mjust going to buy a higher grade one for wayyyy more money just so I can have one. Thanks for the info everybody. DEVLEC, I have always wondered why they look different like that, I like the 30`s ones better though.

Yeah, I followed that one just to see. Odd that there are two unc ICCS BIN for at or below that price - MS62 and MS60 - yet people go for the raw 2x2 and questionable photos. Hoping to win big on MS64 I guess. Every other "BU Flawless" that seller has listed looks harshly cleaned to me. What struck me when I first read this post was that the 2x2 looks fresh as a daisy.

ASYN is a phenomenon .... they overgrade all of their coins... yet somehow they have a following of sorts that over bids on almost all of their material...
I have no idea how they get a hold of all of their material but they sell piles and piles of coins... and almost all of it sells for full trends price...
I can say this... I personally didn't like the look of this '48.. it just didn't have nice eye appeal... if I'm going to put out a bunch of money for a coin... I will really want to be happy with how it looks

That's why I'mhaving big trouble finding one. Of coarse no coin is perfect... or at least MS-69 and under.

I does not matter one jot that I am not keen on slabs. It should have at least been taken out of the 2x2 for pictures. Better still, it should have been slabbed for sale. That is the best way to provide authenticity for an ebay buyer, and to provide a fair grade opinion. I would not be bothered with it otherwise. Too much money is at risk.

Remember, it's ebay, there is no buyer risk. If the buyer isn't satisfied, they get up to 6-months to change their mind and get a refund.
