I can see this realizing maybe $150-$200 on ebay though I would personally pay less. Guessing from what you said this probably went for $300+.

zxcccxz, I think you are seriously undervalueing this. Without opening any books, I would of the top of my head give a book value of closer to $500-$800 for these coins, and the Capital holder is about $90. I'ld guess an ebay sale of at least $500. The AU/BU Barbers and Standing Liberty's run it up.

I could not in good conscience recommend anyone reading this ever bid on something like that. You haven't the slightest idea whether the coins are even real, much less attempt to grade. So any bid I considered would be based on melt; let somebody else throw their money away.

Very nice looking set. One that would be nice to own. But I am with SsuperDdave on this one. If you buy it, it should be at the right price. There are five coins that going to make or break the price of this set. Barber Half, Quarter and Dime. Two Standing Liberty quarters. From what I can see, the Barber Half looks like it could have problems. If I was buying this set, I would look at greysheet with the lowest possible Grade I think this five coins could be, then buy back of that price. The rest of the coins I would pay a little above melt or face. And then some for the holder. With out knowing the grade of those five coins, would be very hard to come up with a fair price.

It looks like one of those novelty sets they sell on QVC.

$1,645.00 If I have this right, you're giving your avatar coin to the closest guesser...

Just FYI, this wasn't an ebay sale, it has already ended, and the sale price was significantly higher than most of the guesses so far...

Quote: Am I getting closer ? Sorry, I didn't see your post when I posted my last message. It wasn't actually THAT outrageous... The actual sale price was $901 plus a 19% "Buyers Premium" of $171.20, bringing the total to $1072.19 (not including the $18 shipping fee). As I said, I can kinda sorta see how it might possibly have some significant value if the stars aligned in the just the right ways and you made a bunch of unwarranted assumptions as to types and grades, but as SsuperDdave pointed out I just can't imagine anybody paying that much money without knowing exactly what each coin was like.

I wonder (being kind) if this specific set has a collectability factor like some Capitol stuff. Otherwise I'm just here.

I actually would have been a buyer at $200-300, figuring the melt value and the chance that at least some of the older coins were in decent condition might make it worth the risk. My jaw just kept dropping lower and lower as I watched the bidding proceed, however.

The AU/BU Barbers and Standing Liberty's run it up. I just quickly calculated the value based on spot, off the top of my head. They're obviously worth more, but a bunch of them are likely cleaned and not BU, I'm sure they're worth more than the $200 I said, but I'm too lazy to do the math

How does one calculate book value without grades?

Sure hope that whoever got this one ends up with something decent. Without knowing exactly what those are and if in fact real, just really chancy.
