It wasn't really a catch. Came from my grandfather who started collecting in the 1880s (he and my Dad had kids at a late age). I wish he had been more of a hoarder!

The E is just browning. When he accumulated it I don't think anyone cared about the varieties or even knew about them. His cents were in an album....luckily no PVC. A few real gems. Sadly he did not care much about small cents so the key dates were just ordinary. I did get an MS65 1920 and an MS66 1953. The Victoria cents were all lovely though not perfect (mostly MS60 to MS64).

As far as I'm aware the first published report of this interesting variety was not until 1964.

One in ICCS 63RB sold in the 2013 RCNA auction. I didn't buy it, but it is in a collection in the US now.

I have recently started collecting the large cent varieties listed in the 2011 charlton. Picked up a few decent varieties like 1891 Repaired N and 1881 TPN but this might be the finest for me so far! Excited to get coin in mail soon asap! Will share some photos with the group as well!

Can anyone tell if this coin is Obverse 1a or 1? I personally cannot tell the difference!

It's either a 1a or 1a/1 since I can't tell enough detail. It also loooks like some doubling of the denticles and beads in the lower left quadrant, but it could just be glare.

Just got the coin today. I will get some nice photos up asap. Looking like some doubling on N in Regina and Canada as well, possibly doubling on first 8 in the date! Coin is full of lustre and is very well graded by NGC MS63 RB mostly red.
